      Data Engineer Interview

      Application

      I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (New York, NY) in Apr 2020

      Interview

      Data engineer can mean many different things, is it SQL and Data Warehouse? ML, analytics, Big data? Big data, NoSql, dev ops, cloud services? ETL, data munging, apis for data feeds? Data reporting, visualization? Received a coding test first, with SQL queries and expected answers, and one general question about how to perform a merge with very large data. This was a take home test sent by email as the first step in the process. I did the obvious thing, put the data in a database, googled around and ran queries until I got correct results. Non trivial subqueries required. Leave yourself plenty of time for this. Waited extra week afterwards to find time when Amazaon interviewer was available. Also interviewer in Seattle, if in New York, you are 3 hours later. Actual interview, screen share, uses Amazon Chime, but not video though it has video capability, or my interviewer elected not to use, don't know policy . Typical beginning of interview, interview intro, your intro, what you do now. Coding uses livecode, simple text editor, unable to run or see static analysis. Write some sql, write schema for data warehouse, python coding, see below for details. Ended with interviewer session of "Do you have questions for me?"

      Interview questions [5]

      Question 1

      SQL Select the value of a column based on the max of a different column from each grouping of yet a third column. Column A, Column B, Column C. For each group based on Column A, give value of Column B, where Column C is max for that group.

      Question 2

      Give schema for a data warehouse. Give some fact tables, dimension tables, distinguish between different types of dimension tables depending on whether they change often. Question is framed in terms of we need to be able to answer this problem, what number of customers reach a certain order volume for orders above a certain threshold. This can be answered with one table, but the data warehouse way is of course to use ids so this is fact table with a date, but all the other information is in dimension tables. Typically you might segment customers, and also have addresses. Customer Datetime Order Amount
      Answer question

      Question 3

      How do you create a schema that would keep track of a customer address where the address changes?
      1 Answer

      Question 4

      How do you update a table with a large number of updates, while maintaining the availability of the table for a large number of users?

      Question 5

      In python code, given a json object with nested objects, write a function that flattens all the objects to a single key value dictionary. Do not use the lib that actually performs this function. { a:{b:c,d:e} } becomes {a_b:c, a_d:e} ( not, a:"b:c,d:e" }

      Interview

      In my 5th semester, Amazon visited our campus to hire interns for multiple roles, and I was shortlisted for the Data Engineer role. I cleared the online assessment and attended two technical interviews. The first round focused on coding, while the second round focused on SQL. I faced some challenges in the SQL round, and although I was not selected, the experience helped me identify areas for improvement, especially in advanced SQL concepts
