      Business Analyst Interview

      Oct 12, 2011
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Richmond, VA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (Richmond, VA) in Oct 2011

      Interview

I applied through my university's career services website and received an e-mail asking me to work through a personality test. After passing that, another e-mail directed me to a timed math and verbal test. It was pretty straightforward -- the verbal section can be a little tricky but the math section is fine and you can use a calculator. I cleared that part of the process and they scheduled a case interview over the phone with a Senior Business Analyst. In preparation for the case, CapOne directed me to their website that gives you a fairly good example of a case and how one ought to be solved. The case interview was really a conversation and no math was involved since it was over the phone. It went well and I was invited to Richmond, VA for on-site interviews. I booked my flight and hotel through their travel agency and received an e-mail from my HR contact stating that, in the coming 10 days before my trip, they would 1. contact me to debrief me on the interview process, 2. put me in touch with a Business Analyst to answer any questions I may have, 3. most importantly, quoting directly from e-mail, "before your interview you'll also receive an invitation to attend a Case Preparation Meeting online". Only the first of these things happened before my interview -- the HR person called me, told me that there would be one behavioral interview and 2 case interviews, and confirmed that both #2 and #3 would happen soon. They never did, and although I contacted her 4 days prior to leaving for Richmond, I never got a response. I get to Richmond and meet the other folks who are interviewing. We go out to dinner with three current Business Analysts and smile and pretend we're incredibly interested in everything they have to say, excuse my cynicism here. They tell us a little bit about the cases, i.e. that they are quant-heavy. The next day the shuttle takes us to Capital One's BEAUTIFUL campus at 7:30 in the morning. They put each candidate in an "office" and the interviewers all come in one by one. My first interview is a case interview at 8:30; two guys walk in, one is supposedly "observing" the other to ensure that the cases are being delivered properly. I have no finance background so the first part of the case throws me off since they ask to calculate NPV. I stumble through it a bit but solve the case. I made enough mistakes to think that I'm totally out of the running. Next I have a behavioral, followed by another case. The former went absolutely wonderfully and the latter went rather well; I missed a few points that the interviewer was looking for but had plenty of points using my own creativity to answer the question. I was pleased with the second case. We break for lunch afterwards, and an hour later, we're told to return to our "rooms" until the HR person arrives. The HR lady arrives, the same one I have been in "contact" with this entire time, and says that since we didn't get to prepare prior to the interview, we're going to do one more case with a Vice President. I read on here that when they ask you to do a third case, they're on the fence about you, so I tried to get my fourth quarter juices flowing. The VP walks in, he's a super nice guy, we have an excellent conversation and I feel like 100% aced the case. After I finished the case, I really felt like I'd gotten the job, figuring that they'd toss the first case since I wasn't adequately prepared by them and I was nervous. The clear improvement, I thought, would be enough to get me in there. Just received a call saying they are not moving forward with an offer and that I wasn't a "good fit". To be honest, I can't stand these phrases -- Capital One did nothing to get to know me as a person or a candidate, the entire process was solely based on case performance. How they decide that I as a human being am not a good fit is beyond me, but OK. I asked for more details and my request was denied. In retrospect, I'm sure it was the first case interview. I really did improve a ton through the second and third cases and I'm kind of confused as to why I didn't get the offer. I went to a top 5 school, have excellent grades and extra-curricular activities, and felt I was a pretty good applicant. I really wanted to work at Capital One as it's a beautiful campus and the people were all extremely nice. I prepared for the case interviews for two whole weeks doing MANY mock cases with friends over Skype -- I really wanted this but I guess it didn't show quite enough. I'm also disappointed in the HR department for foregoing its responsibility to prepare applicants for the types of cases that Capital One gives which ARE quite different from McKinsey cases, for example. Long story short, I'm disappointed in the process, and pretty bummed about not getting the offer.
