Applied online and got a call three weeks later. The call wasn't really an interview, just a chat talking about my availability and how far I lived from the store I applied to. Told me to come in for a group assessment day the following week. That was today. Got in and about 20 of us were sat in the staff room waiting to be seen in their massive backroom warehouse type room by four department managers, store managers etc who would lead the session. Filled in our availability sheets and introduced ourselves to the group, saying what motivates us. Most of us said "be the best at what i do, progress our skills etc" and one woman said her young daughter motivates her, which was a clearly a sympathy ploy and it worked like hell lmao. Then we were split into three groups and taken to the stock room. We were told to pick out clothes for a customer (acted out by one of the supervisors for each group) within budget. I got kids section, and the 'customer' was a young mother who wanted to dress her child for a short city break with a £65 budget. We then presented back to the whole group on what we chose. Then went back and went onto shop floor in our groups with our supervisors, and were told to clean up the clothes and help customers, be polite, ask if they need help etc. That took about half an hour. Was really awkward as the shop floor was clean anyway and the actual workers were there, meaning we literally had nothing to do but awkwardly pretend to clear things up whilst being watched. Then we went back to the massive room and got interviewed one by one, which lasted about 10 mins. Entire day took about 2 hours altogether. As for dress code, most were smart casual. Girls were in black trousers and shoes and casual tops, most guys were in black jeans. I (a guy) wore a white shirt, skinny black chino's and chelsea boots. One guy was in a suit and looked really out of place. NEVER wear a suit to a retail interview. Always dress smart casual or just casual, like a few guys and girls today. Waiting to hear back now.
