    Engineer II, Process Development Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Illumina.

    Interview

Applied online and received digital interview request, which was supposed to be taken in 3 days. I advice to rehearse well ahead of recording! It is a typical behavioral type interview; it might be better to pick key words from job description and correlate with your past experience during interview!

    Interview Questions

    • 1. Why do you want to work for illumine? Why are you leaving your current position and what are you looking for in your next role?   Answer Question
    • 2. If you had to choose between a job that is 100% data analysis at a computer, or 100% hands-on in the lab, which one would you choose, and why?   Answer Question
    • 3. Describe a recent technical challenge you had to resolve. What was your troubleshooting process?   Answer Question

    Finance/Accounting Interview

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Illumina (San Diego, CA).

    Interview

Video Interview, followed by a phone call, followed by a half day assessment event on site. The whole process was pretty long. Oct-Feb. That could be streamlined for sure. Overall, I felt it was a great way for recruiters to get a feel for the candidates and for the candidates to get a good feel for Illumina.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Illumina (San Diego, CA) in July 2017.

    Interview

I applied online and got an email a few weeks later to complete a digital interview. You have to record a video of yourself answering a few questions that appear on the screen. You have 2 minutes to prepare and 3 minutes to record your answer. I don't really like this process since I don't like recording myself on video. If you like recording yourself on video, then it shouldn't be a problem. For me, it was a very embarrassing experience. You can't redo it either. Once you are done recording, that is the only chance you get. You can practice a few times before you start the actual interview. The practice questions are different than the ones you get for the real interview. The questions I got had nothing to do with the job I was applying for. It was mostly behavioral questions. If they are going to do a phone interview and an onsite interview afterwards like others have mentioned here, then I don't think the video is necessary. It makes the interview process really long and drawn out.

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Illumina in June 2017.

    Interview

I did an on-demand video interview for the position, which is like a phone screen but without an interviewer. The video interviews are conducted through a 3rd party application, HireVue. For each question, you have 2 minutes to read the question, and then 10 minutes to respond. For this position, I did not have an opportunity to re-record a response. There were 5 questions in total, all technical questions. The last question was a programming challenge. I felt the process was very impersonal. The email was an automated email from the HireVue system. I never interacted with the hiring manager or recruiter.

    Interview Questions

    • Describe an application you made. What were some challenges in the implementation of that application?   Answer Question
    • In a 2-D array, should you search by row or column?   Answer Question

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Illumina.

    Interview

Applied through LinkedIn, the process started with a couple of phone interviews with hiring manager talking mostly about my latest project. Then I received an offline programming challenge to implement on a language of choice (Python in my case). The problem was well described and was not too much difficult to solve, took a few hours to do. After turning it in and one iteration of bug fixing I was invited on-site.
The on-site was quite usual rounds with couple of people at a time from different R&D and QA departments, even from abroad. Only one thing was new for me - I had to start with 45m presentation to the whole team talking about a project mine focusing on technical issues. I was not happy how it went, it was actually good and helping experience. It was also a call with HR person with usual idiotic HR questions "describe yourself from your college point of view..." etc. Ended having launch and talk with the manager where we both peacefully decided not move on because of some lack of match... The overall impression is very good - adequate and friendly manager and a team, well built interview process, nice place.
