I applied in-person. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (Pittsburgh, PA) in May 2016
Interview
I was interviewed by a group of four managers. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, no pressure. (I was the only person NOT wearing a beach shirt.) It felt more like a casual conversation than a test you have to pass. But we did cover all the basics: working conditions, job requirements, salary range, etc. They also encouraged me to ask questions at the end. To sum up, your interview is likely to be fairly painless, but take it seriously and prepare for it well.
I applied online. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (SoHo) in Jan 2026
Interview
Incredibly easy and to the point. Asked about resume, prior exp, why I'm a fit, all the basics. I ended up being accepted for the role but declined due to a better offer elsewhere.

Question 1
What's your work availability and are you able to commit for 6 months
I applied in-person. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (New York, NY) in Feb 2024
Interview
This is a three step process once you have applied for the position. First is with the Captain and another Mate in the store. They have a list of questions (2 pages) of different scenarios that have you describe different situations. How you would handle or have handled different situations etc. If you interview well, next step is a zoom with another Captain of a different store (can be in another state) and those are further in depth about yourself and how the crew and others perceive you. Again more situational questions and how you handle them. The Captain you interviewed with will give their feedback and if all good you, you have a zoom interview with the regional who gets into more situation questions or what is your "why" at wanting to become a mate type of questions. The regional then discusses the interview with the store Captain and gives feedback and the red or green light on the promotion.
