      Account Manager Interview

      Jul 21, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Scottsdale, AZ
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Yelp (Scottsdale, AZ) in Jul 2013

      Interview

The 1st interview was over the phone it lasted appox. 15 min. just general questions. The interviewer is another Account Manager. So, doing some general research on Yelp & being good on the phone should get you through it with out to much trouble. That, afternoon I was emailed to set up face to face interviews with 2 managers in Scottsdale, AZ. Met with the 1st Manager she asked a lot of standard questions, i.e. what is your biggest strength, weakness? & other similar questions at the end of the interview you will need to do a role play... Owner of pizza place, who wants to cancel her ad program after only 30 days because she is seeing no results ... your job, is to talk her out of canceling & sell/ up sell the yelp ad program. Mention deals & coupons & stress all of the visits Yelp generates to its site, you can find all of this information by doing general research on the yelp site before the interview. Make sure to ask for feedback after the role play. The second Manager came in after a brief met & greet ...preceded to ask some general types of interview questions, then you have to do another role play ... in this role play he was a salon owner who is paying for ads he just received a bad review & he wants you take it down right now, or he will cancel his ad service. You need to explain why Yelp can't do this (bad reviews by yelpers can't be taken down), discuss ways to overcome the bad review & keep him enrolled in the ad service. They then will contact you in 1 to 3 day either to set up for a 3rd interview with a sales director or to thank you for your interest in Yelp, from what I was told if the 3rd interview goes well you will receive an offer that is contingent on you passing a background check. Your training will last 2 weeks. General observations regarding the call center/ position… they play Pandora (hopefully you like the mix/channel), everyone dress very casual, they really push the whole stocked kitchens as a perk, etc. it seems like they are pushing a start up culture even though they are now a publicly traded company. The base pay is $40k (not sure about any bonus or commission structure), a nice perk is that they pay 100% of your health benefits… seems like a good place to work & would probably be a good first or second sales job but if you have a lot of sales experience I am not sure this would be the best fit, but if I would have gotten an offer I would probably have taken it.

      Interview

Standard filtering/fluff questions followed by a Mock sales pitch. It was not very different from other Sales/CS roles that I have applied to. It was not very difficult or novel at all.

I just had a quick screening call, and it was really focused on sales, more than on customer service. Cold calling is a big part of the role, and commissions don’t start until about 6 months in.
