      Insights Manager Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at YouTube (San Bruno, CA) in Dec 2019

      Interview

I applied via LinkedIn, was contacted by a recruiter about a month later. A week or 2 later I had a call with the hiring manager. There was a single stats question in the call with the hiring manager, mostly questions about my current role. It wasn't very complicated but the manager seemed really sharp and nice. A few weeks later I had an onsite with four people lasting around 3.5 hours. The questions were all similar in that they would ask me to use an example from my career to illustrate how I handle a business situation. It was very casual and relaxed, surprisingly so. They didn't offer me any food or drinks during the 3.5 hours and I had to ask for a bathroom break. Not sure if this was intended. Thankfully I had a large coffee prior or I'd have probably gotten a bit sleepy. My understanding of the opportunity was that it was going to be a highly analytical and strategic role where the goal was to grow YouTube via business insights. During the interview process it became apparent that YouTube has a very immature analytics and data system, and the role would require a significant amount of building tables and designing data structures. They need the basic questions answered and aren't in a position to analyze more complex ones. I didn't really want to do this and I think they caught on that I wasn't very enthusiastic. Everyone I met was exceedingly nice through the process. Coming from a high pressure company it felt like everyone here is relaxed. If the role is right for someone then I think it'd be a great place to work. But the role wasn't what I wanted. I was going to decline even if they had offered. Aside from noting my lack of enthusiasm, they somehow got the impression that I was less technical than desired, which is laughable as I did literally the exact thing they wanted for another large firm. Oh well. The recruiter told me to reach out if I see any other positions at YouTube (not Google) that I'm interested in. If they do have something that matches my interests better I'm sure I'd be very happy working here.

      Question 3

Lots of questions about how you deal with difficult business situations, e.g. you didn't do your job well, you can't meet needs of someone, etc. There really wasn't much in the way of technical or analytical questions.
