The rail system is made up of more than 14,700 route miles owned by Norfolk Southern and nearly 4,700 route miles of trackage rights, which allows NS to use tracks owned by other railroads.

NS offers an extensive intermodal (freight transportation by a combination of train and truck) network and is strategically located at all major eastern US river, Atlantic, and Gulf ports.
