Learning.com – Why Work For Us?

We Work Hard and Play Hard

Our dog-friendly, creative workspace is located by Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. We get the day started off right with Stumptown coffee, fresh fruit, and oatmeal. Holiday parties and decorating contests, monthly Thirsty Thursdays, potlucks, cook-offs, office BBQs, an annual company picnic, and sponsored fundraising running events are just a few of the ways we let our hair down. Flex-time and telecommuting opportunities help our employees maintain a positive work/life balance.

We Take Care of Our Team

We promote health and happiness at work. You can count on our generous benefits package, which includes medical and dental coverage, a 401k Plan, long and short-term disability and life insurance. We also have an Employee Assistance Program, reimbursement programs for medical, dependent care, fitness club membership, parking, and transportation (including bikes of course), an onsite fitness boot camp, and several discount programs ranging from phones to homeownership!

Did we mention we get payday treats?!

We Invest in Our People

Everyone should have the opportunity to continue their education and grow their career. We provide a number of professional development opportunities and tuition re-imbursement programs for certification, undergraduate degree, and master’s degree programs.

We Support Our Community

Our employees identify opportunities to support our local and global communities supporting organizations like the American Cancer Society, Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Humane Society, Christmas Family Adoption Foundation, Doctors without Borders, and more. We also offer paid volunteer time off so our employees can give back to causes that mean the most to them.

Diversity & Inclusion

We strive to create an environment where all employees thrive. Our diversity and inclusion mission is to inform, educate, and foster a  respectful and engaged work culture that leverages the unique contributions of all employees.

We Love it Here, and We Think You Might Too.

We get to work with teachers and administrators that care deeply about students and their future. Their passion inspires us to create great products so we can help them provide their students with the best digital literacy instruction possible.

If you’re a collaborative problem-solver with a passion for education, we want you on our team!

I have been working at Learning.com full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a small tech company in Portland, there's a lively start-up feel, with many experimental situations and projects. Management trusts their teams to problem solve, manage time, and produce. The culture is a priority, and its stakeholders strive to be inclusive and leverage employee strengths. Growth opportunities are increasing, though given the companies size, are not always predictable. The product's value proposition is a wonderful reason to come to work everyday, and reaches several thousands of students to deliver 21st Century skills, ensure instructional equity, and prepare them for their future. Competitive benefits and great perks are offered including flexible schedules, telecommute/work from home options, opportunities for professional development, onsite bootcamp, yoga, coffee and fruit, shared holiday meals and festivities, employee-driven committees, community involvement, and more.

    Cons

Though many improvements are happening, it can often feel unclear if the product is headed in the best direction that will prolong commitment from our customers and keep users engaged. As an organization, work is not always allocated in the most intuitive way. Executives do rely heavily on management feedback, versus learning from individual contributors most directly involved in the work. This makes the manager to direct report relationship feel one-sided at times. However, lots of opportunities are given to provide feedback, and results often follow.

    Advice to Management

Stay mindful of Execs delegating complex requests that require detailed feedback from individual contributors without a completed feedback loop of either a plan of action or a proactive solution.

Ensure managers have time to manage. Teams like to feel like their managers have time to invest in them as individuals.

Keep up the transparency with the state of the product, industry, and vision to keep employees engaged and trusting.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Learning.com (Portland, OR) in July 2018.

    Interview

It was a very positive experience. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and professional. The process was quick, but thorough. There was a brief phone interview followed by a formal in-person interview.

    Interview Questions

    • Describe a time you had a disagreement with a coworker. How did you handle that?   Answer Question
    • If the phone rang, you had a chat request, someone sent you an email requesting assistance, you had a meeting in five minutes, and an internal customer was at your desk asking for support, in what order would you handle those tasks?   1 Answer
    • How do you handle high-pressure work environments?   Answer Question
