Founded in 1979 by CEO Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic is a Boulder, Colorado based data storage hardware manufacturer, that provides tape and disk based backup and archive solutions to hundreds of unique customers around the world. Target industries vary, with business in media and entertainment, high performance computing, video surveillance, federal government, and more. Meet Nathan Thompson. During his second semester as a college freshman, majoring in Electrical Engineering/ Computer Science at University of Colorado, he wasn’t making enough money at his summer job to cover looming tuition and rent bills. With a limited amount of time and a desire to put his knowledge to work, he decided to use his last $500 and start a business buying and reselling used computer equipment.

Fast forward to today. Nathan’s $500 investment is now a thriving, Boulder-based technology company that manufactures tape and disk based data solutions for the archive and backup of mission critical data. Whether storing the footage from the latest episodes of the Discovery Channel’s original programming, capturing data sent back from the NASA Mars rover, or keeping the world safe by archiving video surveillance footage, Spectra Logic plays a vital role in the storage of data for a wide variety of organizations all over the globe.

    I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at Spectra Logic (Boulder, CO).


    1. Phone interview with HR
    2. Invited to attend invectives. When I arrived was immediately given an unexpected IQ test.
    3. Interviewed by a panel of 6 peers.
    4. Called back for second interview with 4 people that would report to me, followed by yet another panel interview with 6 more people that would report to me. Interview with hiring manager.
    5. Called back for panel interview with 8 engineers, followed by 1:1 interview with VP Ops.
    6. Received a phone call from HR asking if I could come back to interview with one more person (peer level) who had been on vacation. I refused having already interviewed with 25 people. If they couldn't make a decision, what difference would one more person make?
    7. Received, negotiated, and excepted offer.
