Pros

Are you degreed? Do you want to work for a CIO that “hates technology”? Are you attractive? Do you know how to mingle? Do you want to work for management that doesn’t support you? Are you superficial? Do you lack actual IT skills, but wear stylish socks? Do you want to work for a CIO that has never led an IT department, but is a college buddy of the CEO? Do you want to work at a company that hasn’t given us a raise in two years? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then Apache’s IT department is for you.

Cons

Can't think of any because Apache is a great company and there are so many people that look good. I'm not sure they will make their goal of wanting people to work at Apache IT instead of Anadarko IT. Currently Anadarko is still beating them.

Pros

The only pro about working in this role is that you will be exposed to all facets regarding Oil & Gas business practices.

Cons

This is a highly demanding, pressure-cooking job and the pay is not worth the hassle to the lack of work-life balance that you will experience. Executive admins will make significantly more salary and only support one c-level exec whereas you will have to support all the executives and their admins. You will be pulled in so many directions and will not be backed up by IT management. You are literally on your own since no one wants to handle or interact with executives since there are walking land mines everywhere. You can provide the best customer service and will be back-stabbed and bad-mouthed by minimally talented executive admins. There is a long history regarding this IT Executive Desktop Support role. You will be told that they could not find the "right person" but the truth is that no one that has ever worked in this role has lasted longer than a year. This role becomes open year after year for the next unsuspecting prospective employee. It is shameful that Apache has not corrected this issue but this is very telling regarding their management and culture.

Pros

Excellent benefits package, competitive salaries, intelligent hard working employees - this is a lean machine, so if you aren't keeping pace and working with a sense of urgency, and a fire in your belly, eventually you will be gone

Cons

Didn't realize just how bad it was until I hired on at a new company. More work than staff, unhealthy work life balance. It doesn't matter how long you work there - no one cares, it will not make any difference now or if you leave. Information is not only withheld, but management will flat out lie to employees about the company, it's future, etc. It is still an old school boy's club, and there is a hierarchy amongst staff - at noon the executive floor is like an episode of Mad Men with skirted women rushing to prepare lunch for the men - yuck! I miss the benefits - they are just unmatched. That said, I don't miss the workload, or feeling like a second class citizen to anyone with a total above mine, or the unsettling feeling that you could be let go at any minute - no matter how long and how hard you worked.
