I have been working at Appriss full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

ROWE, Benefits, Mission-Driven Organization, lots of opportunities to grow for above average and excellent performers, pay is competitive and most of the coworkers are great.

    Cons

With an organization this size, you are bound to encounter issues (e.g. your manager, bad company habits). Some teams live out ROWE better than other teams. It's important to ensure that you vet out what ROWE looks like in the role you're applying to. In addition, make sure that you'll get along with your boss.

    Advice to Management

Keep refining how we work, set 'best practices' surrounding vacation and ROWE, ensure that we keep trying to innovate and try to remove obstacles (sometimes we are our own worst obstacle).

I have been working at Appriss full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A results only work environment (ROWE) means that you are able to work from home frequently, take time off for a multitude of reasons, and even structure your work schedule around a realistic lifestyle. Tuition reimbursement allows for personal development. An on-site wellness center is a big perk for people with children enrolled in the corporate health insurance plan, since most visits come without copay or other charges.

    Cons

Very few managers and directors seem have real experience developing software, database, applications, or other solutions. This means that projects are pushed by a sales departments, without background knowledge of actual data or product resources. Pay raises are rare, unless you fight to climb in the organization. Unfortunately the management structure is very tall, meaning that there is a high manager to worker ratio. This leads to very technical discussions being relayed through too many managers without technical knowledge. Best practices for development are pushed aside, anecdotal testimony takes president over evidence and proof, and education and expertise is often trumped through petty defensive managers that see evidence of needed improvement as a threat. The new office environment is a huge disappointment, as distractions have multiplied. Taking away people's offices and placing them in a cube is an obvious cost savings measure, and the lack of raises makes it obvious that the cost savings is not enjoyed by your employees. Management's ever-shrinking appreciation of employees has become a great concern.

    Advice to Management

Tech firms often suffer from high turnover, Appriss suffers from the opposite. There are many studies showing that an optimal turnover rate at a firm can be defined. Find the optimal turnover rate, then utilize it to make your organization less tall as you grow. Finally, stop making promises to your employees that are blatant lies.

I have been working at Appriss full-time

    Pros

Work is useful to the community.

    Cons

Moved engineers from individual offices to cube farms/shared tables.
Doesn't listen to employees concerning their needs.
Has recently hired military-style managers who dictate schedules, workflows, tooling with little to no input from engineers,

    Advice to Management

Start to listen to your engineers again. Make Appriss creative and fun again. A pretty building does not make Appriss a good place to work.

I have been working at Appriss full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Excellent health and medical benefits
    Work from home as needed
    Convenient location with free parking
    ROWE flexibility in some teams
    Awesome corporate mission

    Cons

    Functional silos
Not enough on-site technical resources to maintain critical infrastructure
    Confusing technical support organization
    Nepotism
Lack of coordination between sales/account management and technical teams
Use of project management tools are at manager discretion-- so employees are left with no documentation to support their work
Managers are allowed to limit their employees' interaction with other teams-- so employees are forced to work without collaboration
Annual incentive program-- regardless of the agreement that employees sign, managers can offer incentives at their own discretion, resulting in employees with identical metrics receiving vastly different incentives.

    Advice to Management

Now that Appriss has acquired its competition, service is key to keep customers from seeking startup alternatives. Flatten the organization-- give everyone a voice. Work to eliminate silos, and remove managers that force their teams to work alone. Salary study to evaluate possible discriminatory pay practices.
