Pros

Hard to think of any

Cons

It’s unfortunate that HR is constantly posting fake reviews in an attempt to hide how horrible this company is. Don’t believe them, they are the obvious posted with no real insight associated with them. Here are some reasons why you should never work here: 1) The CEO has no real business experience. His only skill is leveraging his families money to keep himself busy. 2) The turnover of staff is incredible. People get tired of being lied to. 3) The product is non-competitive and is a patchwork of different services based on whatever thought the CEO thinks might work that day. 4) The employees are burnt out. 5) Nobody except management actually makes any money. The sales team never achieves unrealistic quotas, there are no realistic stock / option incentives (look at the vesting period...impossible to achieve) and end of year bonuses aren’t even a consideration. Ask almost any outside tech recruiter about the firm and they will tell you why they avoid this firm at all costs.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We rely on Glassdoor and other feedback channels to inform us on how we can improve. Our experience with Glassdoor is that it has a sophisticated audience who is able to decipher between an authentic review with positive intent and other types of reviews. As an industry leader, we are very proud of the culture we’ve built and are still trying to evolve and grow. Our talent retention is well above the tech industry benchmarks, and have been tracking at over 80% retention for the last two years. We’re also quite proud of our recent award as runner up for Chicago’s Best Tech Workplace for Diversity recognized at this year’s Timmy Awards by Tech in Motion. One of our top accomplishments this year is our ability to attract a lot of top talent from the industry, and we do that largely through employee referrals and social networking. Our very recent infusion of $20M in capital creates value for all of our people who share in it through equity. That said, Backstop is not for everyone and we have high performance standards. It’s unfortunate that competitors or recruiters use negative selling tactics, but we recognize it is a reality. Our choice is to approach the market through a positive position of strength, with an unwavering commitment to help solve the top problems our clients face in the institutional investment industry.

Unethical policies

Pros

The snacks, beer and people are easily some great reasons to work at Backstop but they're outweighed by the cons for many people.

Cons

No upward momentum. The HR policy is (seriously) to NOT give people a raise when they're promoted until they've been doing that job for 6 months. It gives no incentive to do well and get promoted. If you want a promotion(and wish to be actually paid for what you're doing), you have to leave the company. They said that "this is for the employee to see if they like the job" but nowhere else that I've worked does this. It's a terrible policy. Hired from the outside? Great, they'll pay you what you deserve. Promoted from within? Too bad. No raise for 6 months. No incentive to do better work.

Pros

A lot of smart people working here

Cons

Company pays lip service to employee development and career paths are defined on paper but completely ignored by managers. A lot of institutional knowledge walks out the door on a weekly basis, but the company ignores that and calls it "regular employee churn". The Professional Services group management acts like its running a proper consultancy with an obsession on utilization goals, rather than being a customer success engine for the company. This is completely disconnected with the overall goals of the company and is causing a lot of strife with other departments. Turnover in this group alone is huge.

Thank you for the feedback. We agree that intelligent people are our most valuable asset. Yes, it’s true we have a lot of first time managers of people, and professional services has been a leadership talent training ground. We’re thrilled to have promoted former PSG leads to run our RM and Product departments within the last year. This movement, combined with 10% turnover on the team, does create the feeling of churn. We hope there is some good will and understanding for this type of turnover. Our preference to promote from within does create a learning curve for new managers, and we acknowledge that. You may feel like your individual needs are falling on deaf ears, and I can assure you it is unintentional. We constantly have to balance the wants and needs of individuals with the requirements of the greater good – our team, business, and clients. I would love to discuss this with you 1:1, to provide clearer feedback about timing and any development gaps. As for utilization - members of the Professional Services group do have utilization targets. These goals are communicated and measured frequently, which is a fairly common practice for teams that track time for client billing. Professional Services’ utilization targets have always included time spent with our clients, and our goal is to increase the time that we are able to spend with them to ensure that they are engaged, happy, and obtaining the benefits they want from our products. Having listened to team feedback from 2016 targets, activities included in utilization have been expanded in 2017 to keep them in line with overall company goals and client service. I’m excited about the road ahead, and we have carefully considered the big picture in these changes. My door is open to you and I look forward to working together to map a path forward.
