Excellent Company. Shaky at Times but Seems to Have Found Footing
Dec 12, 2022 - Software Engineer in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Generous benefits - Friendliest people I've ever met in tech - A culture of taking care of their employees and experimenting with ideas - Optional hybrid model. - Unlimited PTO. And they really mean it.
Cons
- Employment can be shaky, layoffs are common - Seems to be a bit behind the market in compensation, although the annual 10% bonus is quite nice - Favoritism is very apparent here, and not really attempted to be hidden
- Former Employee, less than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
- Great culture - Good benefits
Cons
- Don’t have any cons

Pros
The people are great. Everyone is friendly and genuinely wants projects to go well and the company to succeed. Benefits are pretty good for a company of this size. Compensation is pretty competitive for Austin. Location downtown is great. Good work-life balance. Dedicated to diversity and inclusion. Managers really care about their direct reports and our personal growth and development. One of Built in Austin's Best Places to Work.
Cons
Tech stack holds us back. We all know we need to update and work down the tech debt. It is a moving target and we are always chasing it. This slows down development and limits our ability to be creative with new features. Some previous employees with decision making power held us back with their strong opinions and unwillingness to compromise. Things are reorganizing and getting better, but it's a slow process. Because of this there has been a lot of attrition which compounds the problem. We have been hiring quite a lot to make up for the losses so the onboarding also takes time.

Growth Company with great culture
Feb 18, 2022 - Senior Sales ExecutiveRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Dealerware has built a knowledgeable sales team with a mix of industry insiders and outside perspective. Good compensation and strong growth potential selling against stagnate competitors that are failing to innovate. Relatively small sales team compared to size of product team means lots of influence on projects and future growth. Management has an employee focus and takes care of team members. Compensation increases, Paid Parental Leave have been introduced recently. Taking PTO is encouraged, personal growth plans are part of the annual review process.
Cons
This company is transitioning from a start up to a mature growth company. Like other companies at this stage there are growing pains. Things like lack of process standardization or to many/to few staff on certain projects can be challenging. I don't mind this, and times find it refreshing. Some employees find this frustrating, though.

Product and Engineering Nightmare
Apr 13, 2021 - Software Engineer in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
They pay for you to drink occasionally.
Cons
Your life will be pointless meetings if you work here. We had no less than 2 all hands a month. As a developer, I was in about 20 hours of meetings a sprint. Mostly meetings to plan meetings. The company organization is a mess. In two years I was on 5 different teams with 4 different managers. You will never get anything out, it’s impossible. Everything gets scrapped. There is no product roadmap and they’re hemorrhaging money. They let sales dictate the product flavor of the month, so as you can imagine the product is awful. They can’t even do a live demo. The “culture” that they talk about is blindly and enthusiastically following a leadership team that has less experience than the people they hire and continually lies about the state of the business. The current COO was the previous CPO (over product and engineering), despite ANY experience in either department. The current CEO, currently in charge of product & engineering, boasts the same level of experience in software, none. This is a dealership company that’s attempting to dabble in software.

Heading in an amazing direction!
Jun 22, 2021 - Software Engineering Manager in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I've worked at quite a few different companies in different software industries (video game, start-ups, enterprise) and I can say that the people here are some of my favorites I've worked with. Pros - The diversity and inclusion program – As a person of color, I’ve been impressed with what Dealerware is doing and how they continue to grow this program and awareness around it. It is nice to know that you work for a company who really cares about these types of programs and the importance of them. - I'm a big fan of our VP of Product/Engineering - She is bringing a lot of positive change and really is the type of Product & Engineering leadership this company has needed. The impact she has had in the last 3 months has been very transformative for our Product Engineering group. - Servant Leadership - The leadership team here passionately believes in servant leadership and practicing what it preaches. - Autonomy - Engineering teams really have a lot of autonomy (within reason) - Culture of Learning - We're really building on a culture of learning here and I love that we promote sharing and learning amongst everyone. - Transparent/Progressive Leadership - The executive team is honest and forthcoming with information. They really empower teams to help make a difference and it has been great to have a leadership team who also address things happening in the world around us and the effect they may have on us in our day to day lives. There are obviously other great pros, like the PTO policy, vehicle discount programs, etc. But I think the best thing really about this place is the people and how bought in everyone is to making positive change for our customers and our culture. This isn’t a start-up, this is a growing SAAS software company who really has a chance to make a difference in a competitive market.
Cons
I'm going to speak to this from an engineering leader’s perspective as I wouldn't feel right commenting on other departments. I do genuinely believe that there is always room for improvement at every company and that there is no one perfect company that has everything figured out, otherwise we’d all probably be working there right now. I am also lucky to have had the many different work experiences over my almost 2 decades in this industry to compare Dealerware to, so I am just going to be honest with you. We are a growing ambitious company that is owned by a very well-known automotive company who is really trying to tackle an interesting problem space. As an engineer, you may or may not care about this. To me, I thought it was interesting, but it was really the people and culture that brought me in. There were some not so great technical decisions made in the past that are being worked through right now so we can continue to grow our platform and really become a proper SAAS technology company. - Do I think our engineering problems are solvable? Yeah, absolutely and we’re working towards that! - Do I think we’re moving in the right direction? Yes, especially now in the last few months! - Do I think we need to give more love to infrastructure and modernization work? Yes, and we are doing that and hiring for that! - Do I think we need to codify some of our engineering best practices? Yes, and we’re also doing that now. - Do we have enough people to do this right now? No, we don’t that’s why we’re hiring so much right now. - Do I believe we’re heading in the right direction with the right people in charge? Yes, absolutely 1000% yes. I can’t speak for any of the negative comments, but I can say based on my experience and the changes I’ve started to see and help implement, I’m really feeling positive about what we are doing and where we are going as a tech company.
