Pros

They don't test for weed, and they have a fairly loose dress code. Piercings, tattoos, and fun hair colors are fine. The job itself is interesting, and if you like picking out frames for people it's fun.

Cons

Your store manager makes a huge difference. I've traveled to other locations and while two were good managers, the other was so OCD (down to the number of pens/alcohol swabs/etc you kept in your desk) working there was a chore. Unless you're getting a promotion, they cap raises at 4% of your current wage, and they cap hourly employees (from what I can gather via employees who have been there longer) at about $23. Because glasses and contact lenses count as medical devices there are certain laws that must be adhered to, which includes needing to renew your contact lens prescription yearly. Customers are very vocal about their belief that 1) this is a visionworks scam or 2) you should still make an exception for them even though it's against the law.

Pros

Pay is competitive Other opticians are welcoming Commission for sales

Cons

Customer satisfaction is not the priority. Case in point: Telehealth exams. Telehealth exams are a nightmare for the staff, and more importantly, for the patients. The company schedules one every 20 minutes, but each telehealth exam takes 45 minutes to complete, and that's if everything goes well, which is extraordinarily rare. Way too often, there is a doctor shortage, or electronic issue, resulting in exams taking over an hour. As a result, some patients end up waiting two and a half hours for an eye exam, which is not fair to them. Also, the clinical specialists that work the front desk can be rude and short to patients, which can intimidate them, and numerous attempts at correcting them have been scorned. There's not really anything else management can do about it, since they are protected by the union that opticians and clinical specialists are required to be in
