I worked at FileMaker full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Honestly, if you get in, it's a great company with a great group of people (non-managers, that is) and awesome lunches at a very reasonable price (under $5). Plus, having all the Apple benefits certainly helps!

    Cons

Without ever having an employee evaluation and no advance notice, I was laid off. While this review may come off as bitter, I'll still say I enjoyed working here a lot, like the people, and did become a certified Apple developer. However, management has no feelings or people skills. It's a free for all with everyone fighting for their jobs, every single day. There is no security and zero trust. They promised me one thing when I was hired, and the exact opposite happened. Management holds finances so tightly they never tell any of the non-managers.

Also, one of the director's never washed their hands after using the bathroom. You'd think common sense grows as one advances to managerial/executive levels, however, something was clearly amiss here.

    Advice to Management

Experience means nothing. Hire brilliant minds with a vision for future growth who are willing to strategically take chances and develop the FileMaker brand. Seek more from the old, mainstay-ers who simply collect their check but don't actually contribute to the organization.

And for that director, please teach manners.

    Pros

a wholly owned subsidiary of Apple, inc. is a major plus, you get all the Apple benefits. There are some great talented people there. Work/life balance

    Cons

A lot of politics in upper management. Don't go to HR with any of your concerns, just remember they are not there to help employees but help the company. Also, you are not anonymous if you go to HR, the whole company will find out.

You need to be a part of the "club" to move anywhere in the company. It's not your talent or your hard work that pays off, its who you know and what department you are in. There's no career growth. You'll get the extra work but don't count on being promoted.

Its like high school, a lot of gossip and rumors which ruins the morale of the employees.

    Advice to Management

once upon a time it was a great place to work. Stop promoting people who have no idea what they are doing and please increase the morale of the employees that are still there.

    Pros

If you are looking for a workplace with intelligent, dedicated, NICE people, this is it! Good teams, good cross-functional teamwork, Apple benefits with a good work-life balance.

    Cons

Reorganized marketing department still trying to find its way, but I believe it will work out very well in the long run due to the dedication of the employees.

I worked at FileMaker part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a great small company with big company benefits because you receive all the benefits an apple employee would get (since it's an apple subsidiary)
    Loved the people and atmosphere

    Cons

No room to move up or even extend an offer there

I worked at FileMaker full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's like working for a small company with big company benefits (FileMaker is owned by Apple). Stable company, able to work and thrive for many years under the right conditions.

    Cons

Turnover is low, so there's little room for upward movement within the company. The executive staff is often more concerned with the the bottom line and staying out of Apple's cross-hairs than they are with innovation and retaining good people. This sometimes results in people who are making a decent salary getting a target painted on their backs.

    Advice to Management

    Retire.

I worked at FileMaker full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The product is tremendously beneficial--laypeople can use it to really get a handle on what's important.
It's been awhile, but I thought the culture was great--fun launch celebrations, good and open communications for all-company meetings.
They have a good focus on product quality, which is fulfilling and not always the case.

    Cons

I believe change happens slowly--unusual for most tech companies.

    Advice to Management

Try more new things to grow revenues.
