I have been working at FirstComp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Decent benefits and work hours

    Cons

Ever changing procedures. CSR's handle calls for policies, general claims questions, billing, audits and anything else that other departments do not want to take responsibility for. There is absolutely NO chance for advancement in the Henderson, Nevada office. The salaries are definitely below average; seems people work at FirstComp for experience and move on to another employer that pays better.

    Advice to Management

Have someone available on the west coast for first report of injuries (filing claims) so they are not leaving voicemail messages. Have a billing Rep available to reinstate cancelled policies, instead of Insured's leaving a message for a call back the next business day.

I worked at FirstComp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Culture, Passionate energetic atmosphere. You use to be able to talk to all levels of people through out the organization.

    Cons

Micromanaged now, must meet daily/hour quotas, if not your scorecards isn't good. Owned by a larger company now and its all about bottom dollar and how much revenue is brought in. No more energy in the culture, and a lot of two faced people in management now.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, have fun a little and STOP thinking about your own wallets. Be available for employees, and break down the silos.

    Pros

Very personalized career paths. Management supports you and they are vested in your success. They encourage education and growth. FirstComp was purchased by Markel Corp, which has allowed the company to truly evolve into a phenomenal culture of personal growth, career growth and shareholder growth.

    Cons

Lack of standardized procedures and centralized processes.

I worked at FirstComp full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Never bored, nice coworkers, Starbucks in the building, decent benefits and 401k. Nothing else - this was seriously the worst place I have ever worked.

    Cons

Underpaid, zero work-life balance, unwritten rules, pay for your own parking, even the most tenured underwriters are completely overwhelmed, no formal training, feel like you're walking on glass.

I have been working at FirstComp full-time

    Pros

Best Co-workers you could ask for. It is a young environment, and great chance to get your start if you are not experienced.

    Cons

Pay is awful, they are off by a minimum of 10K for some areas, and as much as 15k in others. They will work you to the bone and show zero appreciation. There is no reward for hard work, since it is completely expected. If you have a family or plan to have a family this is not the company for you.
There is no work/life balance. Management has gone as far to say "It takes however long it takes you, and I expect it to be done". Workload is that of 1.5 people to 2 per one person. Some departments easily work 60 hour work weeks without quality pay to show for the work. They had a huge layoff in 2008/2009 and have since expected their employees to pick up the workload without any compensation. Management claims open door policy, However, you are looked down upon for using that policy.
Some departments discourage you from taking even a 30 minute lunch away from your desk. They do not have any company events for employees to show appreciation. The few times they have their have been managers to discourage employees from going.
Communication is lacking and never consistent or helpful.

    Advice to Management

Management could go to bat for their employees and work on getting base pay raised. Feedback once in a while would be helpful. Reward your employees once they have the experience, or if you think they are important or beneficial to the company.
