I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Frontier are trying really hard to be progressive and create an attractive and open culture. It is an excellent company to work for and rewards talent ( when it's noticed). They have come a long way in the last 5 years. The future is very bright for the company. There has been a lot of changes to working conditions - overtime is rare and paid if necessary, there is management training now and a rejigged and improved benefits package and flexitime. They have embraced a progressive approach but there are still some dinosaur thinking holding things up.

    Cons

The biggest issue is that there's still too much top down decision making from the senior management without enough input from middle managers who are the ones who understand how to make games and how long it takes. They are trying to improve on this but it is slow going.

    Advice to Management

Consult the expertise in your middle management and listen and act on what they say , even if you do not like what you hear!! Empower and trust your people !!

I worked at Frontier Developments (More than a year)

    Pros

Currently transitioning to being a independent game maker with their own, home grown IPs. The staff is mostly friendly and skilled, but somewhat reserved.

    Cons

Open plan offices, badly paid overtime/crunch (you're expected to participate), office space spread over remote buildings. Only very basic lunch facilities. Little flexibility with regards to working hours.

I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Free Fruit and Biscuits twice a week
Scenic surrounding area ideal for summer lunch times.

    Cons

    No career development possibilities
No allowance for developing new skills during work periods
    Too much-undeeded crunch
Management do not reward people going the extra mile
    Promises unfufilled constantly

    Advice to Management

Allow people to learn and develop new skills every so often. Reduce crunch time with proper planning

I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time

    Pros

Great place to work, especially if you are starting out in the games industry.
Really supportive team, great atmosphere and friendly people
    Not much crunch time
    Great projects, popular.
Independent studio, team really care about what they are creating.

    Cons

Not great for young enthusiastic ambitious people who really want to push their careers. Great for a safe secure environment, people with families, but possibly not for someone looking for big investment/big reward.
    Average salaries

    Advice to Management

Stay open to new ideas and possibility for personal career growth
Invest more in skilled personnel to encourage junior members in the team to improve, learn and stay motivated.

    Pros

Good atmosphere, free meals when doing long hours, friendly people, progress based on merit. Creativity and initiative are encouraged and rewarded.

    Cons

No company is perfect because humans are not perfect but to be honest I can't find anything in particular to complain about.

I worked at Frontier Developments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Graduates can get some experience

    Cons

    Poorly managed projects.
25+ redundancies in past 5 years
    Low average Salaries.
    High staff turnover.
    "Annual" reviews usually missed.

    Advice to Management

Nail down the project in pre-production to prevent continuously re-doing work throughout production right up to release which has become the norm.

I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great ethos, clear direction, fantastic environment, good benefits, late night free food, events, good salary, strong leadership, flexible approach. The perfect balance between lack of red tape and expertise in areas.

    Cons

Honestly find it difficult to leave a negative. Even things that as a company you feel could improve are still considerably better than other places I have worked.

I worked at Frontier Developments full-time

    Pros

I've worked at a lot of games companies and some of them are pretty bad to work for. Frontier isn't ideal but it's better than most. People are generally very friendly and their employment terms and conditions are pretty good. They have interesting projects to work on and genuinely try to help their staff.

    Cons

They used to crunch terribly but hopefully that has now stopped. The location is a Science Park, if you don't mind having nothing to do at lunch time you won't mind but otherwise it feels very isolated. Cambridge is very expensive and most people live outside the city in other towns and villages. They have too much creative control in the hands of too few people.

    Advice to Management

If you take away creative control from those beneath you they will leave. It's a common problem in the games industry so you're not the only guilty company but you need to learn to delegate.

    Pros

    - Competitive salary package.
    - Relaxed office attitude.
    - Good HR department.
    - Sensible working practices.
    - Good location.
    - Fun people to work with.
    - Sensible work ethics.

    Cons

The same as most positions on the games industry, few if any chances for promotion, emphasis on seniority rather than ability.

In addition the production department is very slow and sloppy.
