I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

How Frontier blends its ambitious plans with it's relatively short dev cycles forms the root of this company's culture. It can be a highly motivating, or highly frustrating characteristic, depending on how you relate to your work.

Succeeding this in environment is very rewarding, and Frontier is generally excellent at recognising those who do. There are a lot of very talented people working at Frontier, and you're always learning something new when in-the-thick-of-it.

Struggling in this environment isn't the end-of-the-road either. My own struggles were met with support and advice, and what should have been a low point in my career was transformed into something positive.

Frontier doesn't have a 'crunch' culture - it's is seen as a logistical problem to fix if an individual is working late to complete their work-load. Overtime is sometimes requested by production during key periods (the run-up to release, Beta's etc) - these are paid, and kept as relatively short 'bursts', to get us over the finish line. Food is also provided for free for anyone who decides to work late.

For those wondering how 'optional' this is, I am someone who largely avoids working late (for me personally, it's been a false economy, better to be fresh for 9am next day). And this hasn't harmed my career progression at all.

The office is located in the picturesque Cambridge Science park. It's a shiny new building, with all mod-cons.

    Cons

As with most growing businesses, Frontier's seniority can be spread thin. This is both a pro and a con. If you're struggling, you might not get as much direction as you need. But on the flip-side, it can be an ideal place to prove you've got the chops for leadership yourself - perfect for those with a bit of industry experience and a desire to develop their skills further.

I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working on self-published games, creating everything from dinosaurs to spaceships! + fantastic new building.

    Cons

Sometimes feels like there are too many cooks who can't seem to find the right ingredient. This can lead to sprints/working periods with inconsistent amounts of work.

    Pros

Good place to learn and develop your skills, there are a lot of talented people there.

    Cons

Old school vision of doing things, which can be frustrating. A big lack of communication is a major weakness

I have been working at Frontier Developments full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Frontier are trying really hard to be progressive and create an attractive and open culture. It is an excellent company to work for and rewards talent ( when it's noticed). They have come a long way in the last 5 years. The future is very bright for the company. There has been a lot of changes to working conditions - overtime is rare and paid if necessary, there is management training now and a rejigged and improved benefits package and flexitime. They have embraced a progressive approach but there are still some dinosaur thinking holding things up.

    Cons

The biggest issue is that there's still too much top down decision making from the senior management without enough input from middle managers who are the ones who understand how to make games and how long it takes. They are trying to improve on this but it is slow going.

    Advice to Management

Consult the expertise in your middle management and listen and act on what they say , even if you do not like what you hear!! Empower and trust your people !!

I worked at Frontier Developments (More than a year)

    Pros

Currently transitioning to being a independent game maker with their own, home grown IPs. The staff is mostly friendly and skilled, but somewhat reserved.

    Cons

Open plan offices, badly paid overtime/crunch (you're expected to participate), office space spread over remote buildings. Only very basic lunch facilities. Little flexibility with regards to working hours.

    Cons

    No career development possibilities

    Too much-undeeded crunch
Management do not reward people going the extra mile
    Promises unfufilled constantly

    Advice to Management

Allow people to learn and develop new skills every so often. Reduce crunch time with proper planning
