I have been working at HealthEdge Software full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is rare for a CEO and executive management to fully engage in a transparent way. Our CEO has done exactly that. Steve Krupa has role-modeled what a servant-leader really means. His no-execu-speak mantra and extremely direct communication has resonated with the teams and is manifested in our rapid response to issues.

The transformation in terms of agility have been very positive in a great number of teams and for many in management.

    Cons

Some parts of our organization have not been able to fully benefit from this transformation and are becoming uneasy with the delay. Some of these folks engage with those groups who have embraced the transformation and the resulting friction has been uncomfortable.

    Advice to Management

Let's flatten the house. :) The lower the hierarchy the better.

    Pros

Healthedge is a provider of claims processing software for the health insurance industry. It's a relative newcomer, with newer innovative technology, to the industry having entered the market in the mid-2000's (compared to some longstanding competitors around for 20+ years).

The biggest upsides to working at Healthedge includes an enterprise-wide Agile Development culture, even in areas of the company that are not developers. The Agile approach leads to a get-it-done culture that rewards cooperation, transparency, and identifying and solving problems early. Hierarchies and reporting relationships were rarely discussed or noticed. What was valued was being effective in getting things done. The work was rewarding and challenging and good people had opportunities to advance.

    Cons

The downside of the Agile culture, at least as applied at the company, is that it focuses on a series of activity sprints that cycle one after the other. Consequently, there was relatively little time spent on reflection and planning, leading to the company not seeing the forest for the trees, to use an over-used phrase. Some key strategic shifts in the market were missed because there wasn't much of a venue to take stock of those types of things.

    Advice to Management

Balance the drive, energy, creativity, and relentless, incremental problem solving of Agile with periodic opportunities across the organization to step back and assess whatever operating assumptions are in place.

    Pros

if you can work on any product for an year, you will get good domain knoweldge

    Cons

This company is riddled with nepotism and politics. The biggest blocker for this company from growing and has been (as I have heard) are the folks who have been here the longest. They just resist any change, innovation and learning. This company has great potential but its a lack of smart dedicated folks that is holding it back. Older products have not been re-innovated in years. Competition will have no problem blowing us out of the water if this continues.

I still have not understood some folks who here who have been here very long time and have no sense of urgency and drive to get to the next level. Instead they play politics to hold ideas back. Its almost they all want to stay in a rut yet aspire for an entitlement of being there, taking their salary and do nothing to show for it.

We hire folks but they are all in professional services. That was my first hint that this is not a product company which they boast to be, but a buy our crappy product and then give us support dollars kinda company.

They can easily reform it by giving bye bye money to old timers who are not doing much.

The 401k plan is a joke and is an example how things are stacked against newcomers who may be thinking of making a career here.

The CEO may have been an industry veteran but now just come in people's critical paths.

If things don't change in next 6 months, this will loose its ability to compete in the market. So be careful when joining. Sales and marketing is really tough here with given state of the products.

    Pros

Overall HealthEdge is a great place to grow your career. HealthEdge is a leader in fixing the current US healthcare insurance economy.

The HealthEdge developers are smart, social, and collaborative. You have opportunities to work on leading edge technology. The total compensation package is above average for Boston.

    Cons

Like every growing tech company, there is a lot of work and not enough time or resources to accomplish it. But that is a fact of life in the software industry.

    Advice to Management

Listen to advice from the people in the trenches. We have a lot of good ideas that can drastically improve the company profits if you take the time to honestly engage with us.

I worked at HealthEdge Software full-time

    Pros

    Competitive salaries
    Many hard-working, talented people
Small enough that most people know each other, and often get together outside work, which helps foster good working relationships among and between teams.

    Cons

One of the best managers of my career was here, but so were two of the worst. Though there are some great managers at HealthEdge, there are also many managers here who are not leaders. A few verge on being bullies, while at the other extreme, some seem afraid to address conflict, challenges, or toxic situations within their teams. Emotional intelligence is in short supply, and the result is that, at all levels, many good, valuable people don't stay long, and many incompetent or toxic people continue to be protected and rewarded.

Because goals and milestones are constantly changing along with the organizational structure, it's sometimes difficult to feel a sense of real achievement, and it's also difficult to project and carry out long-term team and personal goals. The seemingly short-sighted and reactive business approach here results in a sense of instability and frustration.

    Advice to Management

Please consider that unhealthy leadership at any level makes for an unhealthy organization.

I have been working at HealthEdge Software full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some good people there working under really horrible conditions. Top Management skills are missing. The COO was just replaced and has been given a chair next to the door. The Board is made up of venture capital firms to whom money is owed. Stock options are worthless. They have not made a solid sale in 18 months. The Board is extremely nervous. The positive aspect about the software is also its weakness. Flexible business rules which results in over complex configurations which do not work. The technical direction folks are completely clueless about HIPAA compliance, EDI and ETL technologies.

    Cons

In April 2014, of 250 current employees - 70 were let go. Those not let go, have been leaving on their own. The company is waiting for the magic unicorn (large sale to a BCBS chapter) to save them. Not realizing that this would be the equivalent of catching a 1000 lb tuna in a row boat.

    Advice to Management

The board should replace the whole lot of you. Give up the pretense of having any management capabilities never mind top mgmt capabilities. I would wish the remaining good people well but their best bet is to leave now.

    Pros

Some great people interesting rules engine They are eager for java programmers

    Cons

Very tense atmosphere. Women have different work but men get promoted. I am filling with MCAD. Not a place for women. Product has only been in production 1 1/2 years and many bugs are popping up. They do not seem to value industry knowledge. It is engineering driven, build first, spec later.

    Advice to Management

Everyone knows you are leaving as soon as you can win a big sale and can go public. This is resented every time staff is reminded.

    Pros

Exciting times, plenty of growth in the market, great people to work with. I've been with company for almost a year and really enjoy working here.

    Cons

Fast paced, I like that in a company (was in Health Care prior, and day to day became stagnant), however not everyone likes fast pace or change. Not a good fit for someone who does not conform to change well.
