Pros

Amazing co-workers who go above and beyond to help each other out and who work well to get things done between multiple teams. We had that 'in the trenches together' mentality that you often find in a tough lab based / start-up environment A good stepping stone out of academia.

Cons

For a very small company there is a very clear hierarchy and power structures which often take precedent over scientific expertise. Very top heavy organisation with more managers than 'do-ers' which means that the workload and pressure from above can be overwhelming and limits any professional development time. It also results in far too many meetings than are actually of any use. Having very few experienced project managers means that project management has been chaotic at times, requirements not communicated well, timelines/expectations changing weekly/daily. Lack of vision and awareness of the competitive landscape. Seniority and promotions based on favouritism/loyalty not merit. Most senior positions are filled by white men, if you don't fit that mould it's hard to envision a long term future here.

Thank you for your review of LabGenius, and I’m sorry to hear that your time spent with the company wasn’t as positive as it should have been. With regards to our structure, we’re lucky to have had some brilliant leaders join the company in recent months, who each have vast amounts of experience in their respective areas of expertise — with these senior hires comes absolute clarity over the future facing structure of the business. This has however led to a need to hire for particular levels. We have high standards for candidates at LabGenius, and I have full confidence that the right expertise is being brought into the business to ensure any shortfall in capacity is met. This is something that we continue to monitor closely and respond to as the company evolves. Thank you for the feedback on the clarity of our company mission. At LabGenius, we’re focused on accelerating the discovery of next-generation therapeutic antibodies. We’re doing this by pioneering the development of a smart, robotic platform that’s capable of designing, conducting, and learning from its own experiments. That said, breaking new ground in a field that’s at the forefront of innovation means that the landscape we work in is evolving at speed. In response, I am committed to making the bold decisions needed to refine the path we are taking to deliver on our mission. The cultivation of a diverse and inclusive environment is imperative at LabGenius, and it’s something that we take incredibly seriously. We are proud to say that just over half of our employees are female, with 48% of managerial positions or above being held by women. Whilst this is true, we also recognise that there is always room for improvement, including within the Leadership Team. For example, to catalyse new and meaningful initiatives, we are working in close partnership with a leading independent consultancy, Diversity Scotland — through this work, we are dedicated to creating a more diverse workforce, where everyone’s voice is heard in equal measure. I’m sorry to hear that you feel some recent promotions weren’t based on merit alone. Our robust progression framework sets clear expectations across levels, and is central to employee development. That said, working in such distinct areas of both science and technology means that there is always more we can do to ensure our process is standardised across the organisation, and it’s something we continue to prioritise as we scale. If you would like to discuss any topics in more detail, I would really like to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Thank you for the time you spent at the company, and I wish you well in all future endeavours. James, CEO & Founder

Pros

Colleagues are passionate, incredibly clever and helpful. You can always rely on someone lending you a hand when it's busy. The company has an honourable goal to help develop medicines. A good stepping stone out of academia into industry.

Cons

High turnover rate due to employee burnout and ineffective project management. Flexible working is advertised however in reality there's a big push to return to the office full time.

Thank you for your review of LabGenius, and I’m sorry that your experience at the company isn’t currently as positive as it should be. I’m glad that you have found your colleagues to be passionate about our mission. We put a lot into ensuring that we hire individuals with values that align with our own and I’m incredibly proud to work with such a collaborative team. That said, I am disappointed to hear about some of your other experiences. At LabGenius, the physical, mental, and financial health of our team is prioritised without exception, and we make a conscious effort to nurture it in all forms. The pandemic took a toll on us all, and we recognise that life for some during this time was incredibly difficult — we didn’t get everything right the first time. That’s why we have since refocused our efforts on the roll out of a gold standard employee benefits package, which includes increased pension contributions, private medical insurance, and more time off with increased flexibility, to name a few. Wherever possible, we encourage flexible working and hybrid working patterns at LabGenius. Due to the nature of our work, often no two roles are the same, and therefore we are keen to avoid implementing a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, to ensure that each role is given due consideration, we work on a case-by-case basis, and tailor working patterns to the individual and the requirements of their role. Having said that, the reality is that a large percentage of our workforce are wet-lab scientists and that’s the type of work that often can’t be done from home. If you would like to discuss any topics in more detail, I would really like to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to contact me directly. James, CEO & Founder
