More Pros and Cons

    I have been working at MaxLinear full-time

    Pros

    - Lots of potential for hands-on interactions with products to make a difference in the Company.
    - Open communication between managers/ staff
    - The CEO is hands-on and is very proud of his company; it shows. He seems to know everyone's name

    Cons

    The Company does not have very many frills; they offer snacks/espresso machine each day. Celebrates with snacks for little events like 3-day weekends and Holiday party each year. I would rather be paid the money the Company would spend on extra silly stuff anyway, so it is not a big deal.

    Pros

    There are a lot of smart people. If you do not have a family, MaxLinear can be a good choice.

    Cons

    Hard working culture. Poor work life balance. Some managers yell at subordinates all the time. Had a hard time getting used to be yelled.

    Pros

    Large corporation with the small corporation feel. Lots of room for growth, a lot of opportunity to learn and gain experience. Promotes from within

    Cons

    Break room has an okay selection of things (bread, milk, fruits)

    Competitive work;
    Learned colleagues;
    Love the coffee!

    Cons

    Less work life balance;
    Still functions like a small company in terms of projects and management style.

    I worked at MaxLinear full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good team of TEs and PEs in Operations. Nice new Ops lab - bright and shiny. Ops team has proven their worth and usually have management backing to get needed info from other engineering groups to do their job.

    Cons

    Broadcom-centric, so if you didnt come from there then you are sub-par and have something to prove. Acquisitions are stretching the group thin - engineers and mgrs.

    I have been working at MaxLinear full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Technical responsibility from day one. Great place for young engineers. Cutting edge work and "first in market" designs. The design and product teams are excellent at getting products delivered to market.

    Cons

    Engineer's growth is secondary to resource allocation for projects. Engineers' goals are not a priority during reviews. Clarity on what employees will do from week to week is not given importance.

    I worked at MaxLinear full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    It was fun working with various capable engineers there.

    Cons

    The biased top management always favored/groomed a small group of people in their pocket and ignored/mistreated the people they don't like no matter what contributions those people made. Also they laid off people without justifiable causes.

    Advice to Management

    Be fair to everybody and don't let your personal feelings get in the way. After all Naxlinear is a public company not your own home which can be run by any style you like. Also what happened to "Maxlinear never laid off people with good performance" that once a director said?

    I have been working at MaxLinear full-time

    Pros

    Very Relaxed
    Still has that Small feel
    Great Management
    Constant Growth of the Company
    Sensitive to what will give maximum value to the company

    Cons

    Heavy in Set Top Box (a potentially declining industry)
    Not a lot of learning opportunities (focus on what you know)
    A little on the cheap side (it helps with the bottom line, but at a cost)

    Advice to Management

    As you grow, look to great examples like Bill&Dave (of HP) to keep attracting and holding onto the golden employees.
