I have been working at NetherRealm full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

35 Hour weeks, great bonus package, slower paced than other studios, friendly, goal-focused co-workers. You can find drama if you're the kind of person that wants to find it but otherwise you can just show up, do your work, and head home.

    Cons

Their HR is afraid to fire low performers, so they are carrying a lot of dead weight. People who haven't worked anywhere else think they are doing "crunch" if they work 45 hours...

    Advice to Management

Have the tough conversations, or get someone from WB to do it for you.

I worked at NetherRealm full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The IP you get to work with is wonderful... Mortal Kombat, DC Universe, most of what WB has to offer. The tech is high end, and Netherrealm often gives more-than-expected bonuses or perks. The marketing team is unlike any other, and the artists should be winning awards on their own. I really enjoyed working here.

    Cons

Because the IP is so easy to sell, the game revenue is inflated and often doesn't reflect the lack of professional software development, late and/or lazy design, or sleazy monetization practices. The games "sell themselves", which means that the teams aren't ambitious or striving to be the best. The benefits and potential of this studio and it's software teams are so great, but nobody wants to put their big-boy software engineer pants on and do the hard stuff! I still give it 4 stars, but with simple, professional software engineering practices it could be so much more.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at NetherRealm for less than a year

    Pros

    - Great kitchen stocked with all kinds of goods - Flexible hours - Great leadership that rewards good, hard work and is very supportive of its employees - Benefits are pretty comprehensive - Everyone ive met is awesome and if you give resepct and do good work you will receive it - Office politics aren't really an issue and people with bad attitudes dont stick around for long

    Cons

    - Training for lower- level employees could be a lot better. You get thrown into the thick of it on day one without much guidance and its very much sink or swim - Sometimes people try to drag others down, especially the temp employees with other temps. Luckily most of this is seen and addressed accordingly. - Parking is slim pickings if you dont get there early

    Advice to Management

You guys do an awesome job. Keep up the great work!

I worked at NetherRealm for less than a year

    Pros

This is a great place to start your career and get some experience under your belt.

    Cons

There are not a lot of opportunities to become full-time after a contract. Get your foot in the door then move on.

"Contract workers are disposable, horribly paid, and overcrunched"

I have been working at NetherRealm

    Pros

The only AAA studio in Chicago (aka they have a vicegrip on new grads and hobbyists trying to go pro)

    Cons

$12/hour for associate artists Associate employees strung along from contract to contract for years with no benefits Too much crunch

    Advice to Management

Treat associate employees like human beings

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at NetherRealm full-time for less than a year

    Pros

-Top rated fighting games (million of units sold per title) -Plenty of kitchen perks, game days, company parties -Great Bonus Plan & merit raises (sometimes) -Medical, Dental and Vision insurance -HSA option and low payroll deductions for insurance plans -Good investment funds in 401k (Just wish they would have kept the company stock purchase fund)

    Cons

-A few departments do not take responsibility when deadlines are due (UI especially) -Some gameplay decisions are based on 1 man's decision and opinion -Many departments do not fire or lay off the lazy developers who take advantage of the system and still receive high pay and bonuses. Extremely unfair to those that bust their butts off! -Crazy crunch hours for a genre (fighting games) that shouldn't have crunch if other departments would just work harder and get tasks done on time during the normal development cycle. -Getting promoted is near to impossible. It's better to come into this studio as a Senior or Lead instead of coming in as an Associate and trying to make your way up to Senior or Lead positions. They drag their feet with promotions.

    Advice to Management

-Fire the lazy good for nothings -Stop micro-managing -Have more of an open door policy on ideas and implementation -Give out promotions to those that actually deserve it -Stop abusing the QA contractors that love fighting games. They know what the heck they're doing when it comes to finding bugs compared to the other non-fighting game QA players.

Former Contractor - Quality Assurance Analyst

I worked at NetherRealm for more than a year

    Pros

-casual environment -free drinks and some snacks in the kitchen -everyone in office is just as passionate about their work as I was -free dinner when working overtime

    Cons

-I felt as though there is a disconnect between full time employees and contractors in the company like contractors are treated as second rate -not a whole lot of room to go from contract to full time -there is a '3-month break' in between contract cycles and you can return for a new contract, but only if the studio has room for you. -there is some favoritism and I didn't like that

    Advice to Management

treat contractors equally as your own full time employees, they work just as hard on the projects as them with WAY less pay.
