I have been working at Safety Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Generous benefit package at low cost to employees and flex time. Friendly place to work with nice people. Downtown Boston location. Work-from-home options, but not consistent throughout departments.

    Cons

Great company means lots of long-time employees, so not much room to move into management positions. Very expensive to commute or park to Boston ($200 - $400 depending where you live).

    Advice to Management

Create more leadership or management positions, especially for women. Offer full transportation reimbursement, like Fidelity, rather for QTE tax savings.

    Manage reasonable workloads

    Pros

Very stable company, striving to lead the local industry. Good, experienced management team.

    Cons

In small departments, it can be tough to branch out to other areas of the company.

I have been working at Safety Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Safety is making strides to keep their employees happy. Flexible hours, tuition reimbursement, work from home policy.

    Cons

Some of the mindset is still old school. Politics is the game and if you don't know how to play or who's in the game, you will have a tough time navigating.

    Advice to Management

Environmental changes within the building will go far. Listen to the voices from below as they have a lot of good advice to give. Competition is stealing quality workers due to some of managerial problems.

I worked at Safety Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Safety provides a living wage for their employees. They believe that there should be a work life balance so at 4:30pm, everyone is encouraged to go home.

    Cons

They resist change. Unwilling to innovate and use new technology. Adjusters are discouraged from adjusting their claims. Mandatory call center environment. Required to be on the phones 60% of the day filing new claims and answering questions for claims you do not handle.

    Advice to Management

Innovate. Learn to treat your employees with respect, not as nuts and bolts in a machine. Conduct a SWOT analysis and then start to repair your relationships with the front line adjusters.

I have been working at Safety Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most Coworkers are nice friendly and helpful. Flex time is nice, 1 day off every 2 weeks, rotates Wed, Thurs, Fri.

    Cons

Management is a waste of space. Too busy shopping to be of any help. Only care if they received an insured or claimant complaint. Every manager handles things completely different, no consistency. Very heavy workload. When hired was told would handle 6-8 claims per day. Average day is around 20. Raises are only a cost of living increase, and based on how much you suck up. Performance complete irrelevant. Extremely high turnover!

    Advice to Management

Get off of E-Bay once in a while. Support your adjusters instead of looking down your noses at them.

I have been working at Safety Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

401k 8% matching, tuition reimbursement, dental, health... tons of benefits. Those who stay for more then 10 years seem to like it here.

    Cons

Intentionally lowest pay you will find on the bell curve. Inept middle managers. Micro managing VPs with no idea what their departments are afflicted with. Definitely a bottom-line comes first company. Employee satisfaction is of little concern.

    Advice to Management

Hire a management consulting firm ASAP

I worked at Safety Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I like the company. I worked there for 13 years. Walking to work, living in Boston, was a money saver for me. I had to pay peoples medical bills when they were hurt in a car accident.

    Cons

Getting rid of the customer service department, was detrimental to my work. It made my workload a lot harder.

    Advice to Management

Please get the customer service letter back.
