I worked at VF part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great community; Sales Associates really bond

    Cons

Store is huge and hard to keep up with, lack of management understanding

    Advice to Management

Give feedback on when associates do things well just as much as when they don't; constant criticism can lead to a lack of caring

I worked at VF full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Strong financial performance and cooperative team environment.

    Cons

Slow or lack of decision making. Very reactionary, without concrete strategic goals.

    Advice to Management

Allow the businesses more autonomy to run themselves. Too much central control causing business paralysis.

I worked at VF full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good discounts, very nice co-workers.

    Cons

Hourly employees are not paid for all the time worked. They have the absolute worst HR of any place I've ever encountered. They allow bullying and harassment. They do not promote fairly or give fair raises. I went over 3 years before I had a review and decent raise. New marketing management considers consumers over 45 to be undesirable and "frumpy," which tends to make employees over 45 feel that way, too. Definitely a good old boys' and attractive young women's club here. New president seems like a good leader, but management team does not give him all the facts. Very difficult to move into other positions unless you are in product design. Horrible outdated computer systems...still using DOS-based programs. Just waiting for a major data breach.

    Advice to Management

If you started to care more about your people, they might care more about the company.

    Pros

Decent benefits, product discounts are good

    Cons

Seems to be a few shady business practices in non-corporate locations. Boys club, reduced advancement for women

I worked at VF part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great discount for a great product, I worked at the Vans part of VF. I enjoyed my co-workers, some managers, and the environment was relatively laid back.

    Cons

I know this isn't the same for every store, but my management was horrible, management never communicated with one another until last second, which affected the entire store. Another downside was the pay, now granted we had a very generous discount, but if you weren't full-time your hours were all over the place. I.E. one week you'd have 20, and the next you have 8 (which to be fair is how retail works, but this was during Black Friday month). A large part of that was because employees were constantly leaving, so when new people got hired they were given the most hours as a sort of incentive to keep them, while this was happening the senior employees were leaving because they weren't making enough money.

    Advice to Management

I know this isn't every store, and I have a deep respect for VF and especially for Vans, but to my management, and any management reading this, please for the sake of the store communicate with each other and don't take it out on your associates. Also try to manage shifts more effectively, I know it's not the easiest thing to do, and can also lead to guilt/strife, but it's not so hard that it should be completely bombed.

I have been working at VF full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is very generous for the area. For people joining the "Boy Club", there will be special treatment and protection, even if they demonstrate to be terrible leaders and managers of others.

    Cons

Hostile environment for Women. Passive aggressive culture (which is hiding behind "we are a polite culture", which means that people will not tell you what you think, but will stab you in the back). What they publish externally and to investors is very different to what happens inside the Company (i.e. no gender parity at all... when Women are strong and acertive, they are ostracized and denied of advancement opportunities). Diverse opinions are not welcome and it is still a very old fashion and hierarchical organization. Working here is a nightmare! I am forced to stay because there is no comparable pay in the area but I cannot wait to find something else and leave!

    Advice to Management

Be more in touch with reality and spend time with your employees. Members of the SLT - make sure you get trustable people at lower levels that can really tell you what is happening. Most people are just trying to cover up their own incompetence or protecting their own interests instead of the interests of the Corporation.
