Channel 4 has published an updated series of best practice guidelines to help producers and indies improve how they work with disabled talent. The new guides incorporate the TV Access Project (TAP) Guidelines for Disability Inclusion in UK Television Production, known as The 5As: Anticipate, Ask, Assess, Adjust, Advocate. And they include tips on how to attract disabled people, details of organisations which can help employers find disabled talent and offer employers guidance and support, as well as a range of easily accessible resources available to companies and their staff. Channel 4’s Paralympic Production Training Scheme will give 19 disabled people the chance to launch their broadcast careers with independent production companies across the UK – and some will go on to work on the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games! Successful applicants will spend a year working as Trainee Production Co-ordinators or as Researchers working on sport, entertainment, factual entertainment and factual productions at indies based throughout the UK - Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Chepstow, Glasgow, Leeds, London and Manchester. Channel 4 is renewing and expanding its partnership with award-winning organisation We Are Parable following a successful first year of Momentum - a mentoring and training programme for Black TV, film and content creators across the UK. Channel 4 will work with We Are Parable to help progress the careers of people keen to work in the TV and film sectors in cities including Leeds, London, Bristol, Glasgow and Birmingham, and will also expand across Scotland and the Midlands this year. The mentorships offer participants the opportunity to receive one to one sessions over a six-month period, along with masterclasses and discussions with top experts from across the industry, including from Channel 4 and Film4. Those taking part will get help with everything from script development, financing and funding to collaborating, sales distribution, and mental health support, as well as access to networking and screening events at Channel 4’s hubs in Leeds, Bristol and London.
