The North Atlantic right whale has historically been hunted by whalers and is now facing extinction due to threats of vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglements. NOAA researched the cause for the recent spike in right whale deaths, and found that their feeding patterns had changed due to overfishing and global warming. With the right whales moving to more populated waters with less protections, researchers at Duke Universityโs Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab decided it was time to take action to protect the North Atlantic right whale. Read on to see how these researchers are utilizing Esri technology to help save the right whale from extinction.

From a young age, Lily Jenkins learned how to use geography to solve real world problems. Using Esri technology, Lily and her sister, Sarah, were able to determine that there was a disruption in the ecosystem of their homeland of Molokaโi, Hawaii. Lily and Sarah were able to present their findings to government agencies and at the 2015 Esri User Conference; and it launched a desire in Lily to make GIS her life work. Check out the article to read how Lily used GIS to make an impact in Hawaii and her plans for the future.
Read the recent article from the Esri blog to hear about how GIS was used to optimize the growth of the best wine in the world. The use of GIS for viticulture management at Symingtonโs port vineyards in Portugal has led to significant improvements in crop management and wine quality. GIS allowed winemakers to conduct detailed analysis of productivity levels and see where improvements could be made. GIS is a perfect fit for any organization that wants to optimize their business, whatever it may be. We say cheers, or better yet, saรบde to that!
