In honor of National Volunteer Week, allow us to introduce PIH Health Director of Volunteer Services, Marianne. “I love my job because our team has the privilege of working with individuals who share their time and skills freely to help make our organization a better place to serve and receive care,” she says. Marianne explains what it means to volunteer at PIH Health and provides a small glimpse of the roles our volunteers take on. “Our volunteers are so selfless, dedicated, kind, and strong, and are often an inspiration to me. Every year our volunteers do thousands of tasks, such as discharging patients or delivering specimens to the lab.” With a background in advertising, Marianne joined PIH Health as a newcomer to the healthcare industry. Now she is proud to share that she has been a part of PIH Health for 14 years. “I never dreamed I would end up in healthcare but am so blessed to be part of PIH Health and the wonderful culture we have of putting Patients First,” says Marianne. PIH Health thanks Marianne for her dedication! #Volunteer #PIHHealth #PatientsFirst
Congratulations Danny, a registered nurse from 4 Plaza at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, for winning the DAISY Award! While caring for a patient during their stay, Danny was acknowledged for his excellence in providing professionalism, compassion and concern. “I felt Danny was a true advocate for me” said the patient about their hospital stay. The patient went on to discuss their family's hectic schedules and how this limited them from paying frequent visits to check on the patient during recovery. While limited visits from friends and family can feel lonely, Danny made every effort to make the patient’s recovery process as positive as possible. Danny also provided excellent medical insight, helping the patient understand their pain tolerance and pain medication. “I knew I was in great care with Danny,” said the patient. “I also would like to thank all my other nurses and aides that took care of me. Please know you are angels.” Danny, thank you for putting Patients First!

Paul began volunteering at PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital in June of 2022 in the Ambulatory Surgery Center and the Emergency Department (ED) and now volunteers in the Clinical Laboratory. “From my first day to the present, there is a peace I feel walking into PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, which I attribute to our unified purpose of helping others,” he says, “At the start of each shift, I know I am going to make a difference, even as a volunteer.” Paul enjoys his volunteer work and his many experiences helping patients and staff. “Whether it’s through giving a homeless ED patient a warm blanket and a sandwich, discharging a patient who reminds me of my grandma, sanitizing ED beds and vital signs cables or restocking nurses’ carts, I am privileged to have the opportunity to make an impact,” he shares. When asked what brings him to PIH Health, Paul emphasized PIH Health’s dedication to lifting up others. “

#EmployeeSpotlight: Meet Kathleen, a staff nurse in PIH Health Whittier Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she has worked for nearly 32 years. Kathleen comes from a family of three generations of nurses and chose to be a nurse at an early age. Kathleen says that working with babies has always been her passion. “I have the privilege of taking care of our smallest babies from their day of birth up until discharge,” she says, “Seeing how strong and resilient these babies are is truly the best part of my job.” Kathleen considers her fellow NICU staff members like family, noting that they always work together and do their best in getting these babies home to their families. One of Kathleen’s best memories of her career to date is traveling to Europe in 2022 to visit a former NICU patient that is now a healthy pre-teen and their family. “It was a very special tearful reunion,” she says, “That moment brought my career in the NICU full circle.”
