Michelle always wanted to be a surgical technologist. She started as a CNA, then joined SSM Health as a reprocessing technician before becoming an endoscopy tech. A friend told her about SSM Health’s free surgical tech program, which she eagerly applied for. “I couldn’t afford to cut back on work and go back to school, so this program felt almost as if it had been designed specifically for me,” Michelle said. She found the program challenging but rewarding. Michelle is grateful for her manager's mentorship and the passion of her preceptors, which enhanced her love for the role. The longtime oncology nurse is growing in her new role as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) in Janesville, Wisconsin. “I love what I do because of the patients,” she said. “It’s an honor to be part of their day-to-day.” Michelle started to work in healthcare while still in high school. She took CNA classes through Madison College and worked in a skilled nursing facility, before eventually becoming an inpatient RN. “Providing inpatient care was where I really discovered my love for oncology,” she said. Modern Healthcare magazine has named SSM Health to its list of Diversity Leaders for 2024. The award program honors healthcare organizations working to further equity and inclusion at their organizations and in the overall industry. The magazine praised SSM Health’s work to increase workforce diversity and health equity. Those efforts include cultivating inclusive talent partnerships, expanding opportunities for employees to participate in diversity councils and business resource groups, increasing spending with diverse suppliers, and collaborating with health care providers and other community partners to meet local gaps in the health care landscape – especially those in diverse and multicultural communities. “The organizations honored set an example, from their leadership ranks to their programming efforts, of the results that can be achieved across a workplace,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor in chief at Modern Healthcare.
We continue our series of My Purpose - Our Mission profiles, designed to shine a spotlight on those team members who inspire us by sharing their passion, purpose, and unique talents and skills at SSM Health. This week, the spotlight shines on Chris Bussan, APNP, SSM Health Monroe Urgent Care. . “Chris lives the SSM Health Mission by inspiring his colleagues through his compassionate clinical care and kind gestures. The diverse nature of Urgent Care is one of the many reasons Chris loves his work. He says it is important to validate his patients’ concerns, and help them develop a plan for their health. Part of his daily reflection is asking God to let him be a vessel for Him to work through, and care for His people. Chris volunteers at a kids’ Christian based camp that teaches them respect for themselves and each other. He see how the boys change from the presence of the spirit during their stay. When he isn’t working, Chris can be found tending to four majestic Icelandic horses and a menagerie of cows, chickens and rabbits on his farm.” To learn more about Chris impacts his patients, check out the SSM Health blog. Please join us in thanking Chris for truly demonstrating his purpose and living SSM Health’s Mission every day.
Does it take a village, or a nation? Both, says Will Nation. Will Nation is an information technology professional with SSM Health who has worked with the health system for most of his adult life. Last December, however, Will’s world was turned upside down. Despite no family history, he discovered he has Stage 4 colorectal cancer which had spread to his liver, lungs and pelvis. Throughout this crisis, Will’s colleagues in integrated health technologies (IHT) have formed a “nation” of their own, surrounding Will and his family with love and support. His immediate teammates raised $600 for DoorDash gift cards to supply the family with food deliveries. The greater IHT nation collected $2,000 in gift certificates. And Will’s supervisor, Sal Munaco, has stopped by on several occasions to see how the family is doing and fill up their freezer with home-cooked meals. It’s fair to say that Will and his department embody the “My Purpose Our Mission” movement at SSM Health.
Continuing our series of stories celebrating our many diverse and unique team members at SSM Health, we are proud to celebrate over 1600 SSM Health team members who identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI). Nationally, one in five physicians and surgeons, and one in 11 nurses identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander. We had a special opportunity to visit with Jessielyn (Jessie) Gillespie, a Clinical Nurse Educator for the St. Louis region. Jessie shares how her culture and passion for service helps her be a better patient advocate.
