Dr. Stone served as a communications system engineer in the military for four years before returning to orthopedic surgery. Today, he balances work both as an orthopedic surgeon and health IT advocacy. Dr. Stone says what inspired him to pursue medicine was the people that surrounded him. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through CMS, announced new actions in January 2023 to reduce the inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications in post-acute facilities. TeamHealth is taking an active role in helping providers address this issue. In conjunction with one of our skilled nursing partners, we have worked to reduce long-term antipsychotic usage in facilities across Virginia and North Carolina over the past two years. Our clinical partnerships, together with our keen understanding and evaluation on the appropriate use of antipsychotic medications in the long-term care space, has helped these facilities achieve antipsychotic medication distribution rates that are well below national averages.
