Test proctors are responsible for assisting students throughout formal test-taking procedures including an entrance test, the SAT, or GRE. As monitors and gatekeepers of tests and exams, they ensure students have the resources they need to take the test and that no one is cheating or manipulating while taking their test. Test proctors also explain guidelines and rules and the process for taking the test itself.
Test proctors understand materials and equipment a test-taker may use, including calculators, and are familiar with the exam’s rules and regulations, including allotted time, to enforce them effectively. Proctors check test-takers’ identifications and read instructions to the room. They supervise the exam room to ensure rules are being followed at all times and ensure the environment is suitable for test-taking, which includes properly spaced seating, designated areas for bags or coats, and when necessary checking the room temperature. Test proctors need at least a high school diploma or equivalency. Universities sometimes offer proctor positions to undergraduate or graduate students.
