What is the hiring process like at United Rentals?

      Pros

I have thoroughly enjoyed my progression through this company. UR proves to others that there is a company where you can move up within its ranks and fulfill lifelong dreams. I've accomplished many things in the last 15 years primarily due to UR's commitment to their employees. I highly encourage people seeking a lifelong career and the desire to belong to a dedicated family oriented company to consider working for United Rentals.

      Cons

All companies have their strengths and weaknesses. United is no different. However, the weakness of being too big of a company actually turns into one of their strengths. The company policy of hiring from within when possible is overwhelmingly accurate,

Benefits. Company isn't Afraid to Spend money making your job easier/safer. Safety Culture. Work/Balance. Everyone is Accountable.

      Cons

Corporate.. A lot of it’s “out if my hands” attitude from the branch managers and up. Management has discretion to follow the guidelines and procedures with a lot of flexibility. One person can get fired on the spot without any prior discipline for a minor infraction yet others are only verbally reprimanded for the same infraction, by the same manager/s. Favoritism is huge. District managers are excellent at showing up unannounced to seemingly unload their “shit rolls down hill” issues to the branch manager which then repeats this process until morale has bottomed out for something you didn't know about until someone was pointing the finger at you. Rinse and repeat. Mundane the day to day shop vibe is amazing but the upper level folks are in a competition to prove themselves while leaving the lower guys as collateral damage.

Misled by Leadership, Left High and Dry

      Pros

Very unprofessional experience from the start.

      Cons

I had a very negative experience with United Rentals. Multiple leaders gave me specific assurances that I had been offered a role. They outlined compensation details, territory assignments, and even promised a $10,000 lump sum relocation package. I relied on these assurances in good faith, making significant financial and personal decisions, including relocating and paying non-refundable costs. After all that, I was suddenly told no formal offer existed and that United Rentals took no responsibility. This was both factually inaccurate and highly concerning. When I tried to escalate and resolve the matter professionally, the company dismissed my concerns instead of honoring the commitments made by its leadership. Bottom line: Be very cautious. Based on my experience, United Rentals does not operate with transparency or accountability in its hiring process.

      Pros

In my multi decade working career, United Rentals is the only company I have encountered who genuinely cares about its employees personal and professional well-being. (In that order) United Rentals firmly believes in promotion and advancement within the company and backs up their many words of encouragement with action. You could look for the rest of your career and not find a better company.

      Cons

United Rentals biggest problem for new employees is the hiring process itself. Way to bureaucratic and convoluted and extremely time-consuming.

      Cons

Its not inclusive to all backgrounds, please like to see people that look like them. Keeping it fresh its good to have a tenor person but someone new could be more impactful.
