      Poor management skills

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Talented colleagues: Some co-workers are genuinely helpful and skilled, but unfortunately, many of these talented individuals have left the company, likely due to the same issues that continue to drive away good employees. Decent benefits and pay: The company offers average benefits and compensation packages. Whether these meet your needs really depends on what you prioritize in your work experience.

      Cons

Poor leadership and management skills: The biggest issue by far is the lack of leadership and technical skills among management. Managers frequently make decisions without understanding their long-term impact on the team or the business. This disconnect between leadership and the day-to-day work makes the process of implementing new ideas or changes exhausting and ineffective. The company's inability to manage or foster growth only perpetuates these problems. Toxic work environment: The culture here is stifling. Employees are discouraged from sharing ideas or proposing imp rovements unless it’s something a manager has already approved or introduced. As a result, innovation is severely limited, and employees quickly become disengaged. Good ideas get lost because they don't come from management, leading to missed opportunities and frustration. Lack of expertise and inefficiency: Many in leadership positions lack the necessary knowledge in crucial areas. Basic tasks often require multiple calls, meetings, and emails just to explain simple concepts, which should be handled efficiently. The result is inefficiency, wasted time, and frustration. Projects that should be completed swiftly end up dragging on unnecessarily due to poor direction and a lack of understanding from management. Resistance to change: Trying to implement changes or improve processes is met with significant resistance. If management is unfamiliar with an idea, it takes an excessive amount of time and effort just to get it considered. This creates a frustrating environment where meaningful progress is nearly impossible. Cultural disconnect: There’s a noticeable issue with the company’s American mindset and tone, which often feels disconnected from employees in other regions. For example, I was once told that the tone of my email was NOT RIGHT, and when I asked for feedback, the response was dismissive: "As a sensitive American, I expected this." This shows a lack of respect and understanding for different perspectives, which only adds to the toxic environment. Lack of accountability: When mistakes happen, management tends to shift blame or avoid responsibility, creating an even more stressful environment for employees. I experienced this firsthand during a particularly challenging period where errors led to significant stress. Inconsistent feedback: I received an email accusing me of lacking empathy in my email interactions, which apparently had been a concern raised by multiple sales employees. However, this issue had never been brought up in any of the frequent 1:1 meetings I had with my manager (twice a week). When I asked for specific examples, I was told that I was going to receive a follow-up that never came. This highlights poor communication and a lack of willingness to provide constructive feedback, making it difficult for employees to improve or address concerns in a timely and effective manner. Unprofessional conflict resolution: The lack of leadership skills extends to how management handles employee issues. Instead of addressing concerns professionally, they often delay providing any feedback, or worse, ignore it entirely. This makes it difficult to trust the leadership or feel supported in your role.

      Pros

Remote work, flexibility, good work life balance, good benefits, good managers and overall work place.

      Cons

Quota bearing role can be stressful. Customers often feel they are being upsold. Not a lot of room for growth as an employee.

Laid off and then removed money from my 401k

      Pros

I enjoyed the role and my direct manager was great. The benefits were also quite nice, along with the PTO policy.

      Cons

The company was aware that my position was being made redundant for quite some time and assured me that they would be moving me to a separate role. I spent a lot of time and energy preparing for this, but when the time came, I was laid off without notice rather than given the promised transfer. A few months afterward, the company sent me an email to let me know that due to an error on their side, they would be removing money from my (fully vested) 401k. Not a good look. Having good benefits, culture, and values is completely negated if you treat your employees like disposable garbage.

Thank you for sharing our feedback, as it guides our growth. We apologize for the error resulting in the reduction of your 401(k) employer match. As you know, we offer employees a dollar for dollar 4 percent 401(k) match. 401(k) plans are highly regulated with applicable IRS guidelines. Having a “qualified plan” is what allows us to make contributions with special tax treatment. WP Engine explored all avenues before processing the correction. Regrettably, we do not have the discretion to overlook excess contributions that do not adhere to the 401(k) plan documents. We wish you well in your future endeavors.

      Cons

Too much favouritism in terms of promotion. Already have favourites picked to advance so no point going for interviews Only offer performance based wage increases - no wage increases to match inflation annually Penalised if sick Stressful job Will not hire more techs to make roles easier Training for new hires is terrible Dont hold bad techs accountable.

We're grateful that you took the time to share your feedback as it guides our growth and success. We're happy to hear you find our benefits and value the people you work with, we're proud of the culture our amazing employees have fostered and our Total Rewards Team puts in a lot of work to ensure we're offering industry leading benefits. In regards to no cost of living adjustments for salaries, WP Engine's compensation philosophy is to pay competitive to market based on cost of talent vs. cost of living. We utilize salary surveys to review our salary ranges on an annual basis and then conduct an annual salary planning review for merit-based increases. Thank you for your suggestion on the structure of our bonus plan, we'll make sure to pass your feedback along to our Total Rewards Team as well. We're sorry to hear you've had trouble finding the support you need from our Marketing Organization, we hope that recent changes will support increased bandwidth going forward. Pros

      - A company shows its mettle during a crisis. I've seen people (top down) show some of the strongest ethics, maturity, and courage imaginable in the last 6 months. - Heather is a gifted and serious leader. I genuinely believe that most of the good things about WPE cascade from her leadership and high quality hiring. - Some of the smartest and most genuinely talented folks I've worked with. - Remote-first culture, with no indication that an RTO mandate is around the corner. - People celebrate accomplishments ALL THE TIME at WPE. - While nowhere near top-of-market, the compensation and benefits are fair. With tech companies doing hard cultural pivots, WPE has such a distinct quality of life advantage right now that makes up for leaving a little money on the table.

      Cons

      - Big one: the uncertainty that we live with in the wake of Matt Mullenweg's unhinged behavior, both toward WPE and toward the WordPress ecosystem in general. Causes a lot of unnecessary anxiety. - For teams that aren't near an office hub, it's been hard to get budget approval to travel for IRL meetups. - Restructuring that has resulted in layoffs last year also caused a fair amount of anxiety for employees. - Career growth opportunities are limited lately. Probably true everywhere, but when you're not in hyper-growth mode, there just aren't many spots available to grow into. - Leadership in WordPress seems dedicated to making all the wrong decisions. At best, they're committed to throwing good money after bad on a visual/block editor (Gutenberg) while mostly ignoring improvements to the CMS, and at worst they are intentionally antagonizing their engaged user and developer community. WPE should probably figure out a way to diversify our product lines.

We sincerely appreciate you leaving such thoughtful and insightful feedback! We're so glad to hear you've had such a positive experience with things like our response to recent events, our CEO Heather (we agree, she rocks), our virtual-first work model and benefits we provide, and of course the people we have the privilege of working alongside every day. Our virtual-first hybrid model create some challenges in regards to bringing people together, but we're actively exploring opportunities for teams to connect and hope to provide more chances for them to come together in person. We kicked off 2025 with an initiative called "Vision, Values, Victory" which aims to ensure all employees at WP Engine understand our business goals and how we plan to get to there. It's our hope that this new framing will allow everyone to see how their work fits into the bigger picture. This year we're providing a number of workshops for both managers and individual contributors with the goal of ensuring everyone at WP Engine can grow their career, if you haven't done so we'd encourage you to take a look at these offerings and sign up for any workshops that might be applicable to your own career aspirations. If you ever have more feedback to share, positive or constructive, we'd encourage you to reach out to your EE Business Partner as we're always looking for feedback so we can all thrive together. Thank you again for sharing such thoughtful feedback, we're very glad to have you here at WP Engine!

      - C level and Management are very transparent about changes and what is and is not working in the company. - Safe place to work for minorities (POC, Women, LGBTQ folks) and inclusive of people without degrees/higher education. - Genuinely feels like lower tier roles in the company are treated with equality and respect from higher tier roles in the company. - Fair entry level salary - Opportunities for growth - Lots of incentives/ good benefits

      Cons

      - Salary could be better overall - Lots of changes to adjust to constantly, since the company is undergoing a growth period. - While growth and role changes are accessible, they are not very seamless or transitional, so they can feel out of reach.
