Great for Interns & Grads / Avoid Otherwise

      Pros

Workday seems like a great employer for interns and new college grads. They spend a lot of time, effort, and money on their intern and new college grad programs, and provide a lot of opportunity for training, mentoring, networking, and socializing. As an intern or new college grad, I'd jump at the chance to work there. The recruitment and onboarding/orientation process was excellent.

      Cons

If you're mid to late career you may struggle because the employee base is quite young and there really aren't too many advancement opportunities. My experience was that they like to promote entry-level employees through the ranks, and do so at a quick pace. I had a colleague who was a new grad and hired into the lowest-level associate role in our group, and he was a manager in 2 years. He was getting promoted every six months and passed up people who had been with the company for years. All that to say, if you're going to advance/have a future in the company, you'll know quickly. If you haven't had significant raises and promotions within 2 years they aren't going to happen - you may not make manager, but you should have a couple significant salary increases and promotions. In talking to a couple of people I found that at one point managers had all asked us if we had considered going into management. (Note that we were all in different departments.) We figure this is a ruse to make some employees feel like they have a future at the company when there is none. New managers were given new employees, new grads, and less senior staff to manage, while senior managers had more senior direct reports. It seemed like senior managers cherry-picked who they wanted to manage, and gave everyone else to the new managers. It's unfortunate because new and early career employees could really benefit from having managers with more experience. My manager had been promoted from IC to manager, and had no management experience. She was afraid to ask for help because she wanted to prove herself as a manager, much to the detriment of her reports. And she was a complete micro-manager, which might have been due to her newness in the role. My particular department was really into top-down management. In my previous job I was expected to take initiative and make decisions, but I was very politely reprimanded for doing the same at Workday. It was like do what you're told and stay in your lane. One of the main reasons I wanted to work at Workday was because of the purported company culture. During the recruitment, interview, and onboarding process, they were all about Workday's culture. But once I started that culture was talked about a lot but never materialize. Some of the behavior and treatment of others I saw by some managers went against everything Workday supposedly stands for. And I felt like some managers really looked down on and thought they were superior to regular staff. Too much to go into here. But it wasn't good. I felt extremely lonely and isolated on a campus of 1000s of employees. It was really depressing. I found out that the Workday I wanted to join was the Workday of 5-10 years earlier. This is all just my experience. Some people that I went through orientation with are still with the company and love it, while others like me have moved on. I think people either absolutely love Workday or they don't. And a lot depends on your department and management chain. I recommend trying to get a contract job there first to see if you like your job and the company. If they like you they'll frequently convert contractors to permanent employees. And if you don't like the company or if they don't like you, you can move on without it hurting your work history. If I had gotten a contract position first, I would have never gone or tried to go permanent there. Salaries tend to be lower than other companies in the Bay Area.

      Cons

There is virtually no new hiring for US/Canada/Ireland positions, jobs are being offshored to India. The problems caused by offshore teams cost us a lot of time and money and surely no net gains. They also made promotions much more difficult to come by. 50% in-office requirement.

      An unnecessarily overly woke culture

      Pros

Workday continues to innovate and improve it's product offerings to keep up with AI trends and deliver higher productivity for users

      Cons

On the surface, the culture is all positive and optimistic. However, this is the kool aid they are peddling because they sell HR software at its core. So it has to be about bubbly personalities and "teamwork" but this is all a charade. They sell DEI, championing women, celebrate diversity which is fine but it's a reverse discrimination when left unchecked. There is a darker culture that no ones talks about, and everyone just plays along. For example, allowing people to make false claims to the detriment of others should never be rewarded and validated but this happens quite a lot in Workday as shared by colleagues who are impacted. There is no fair and unbiased HR process because HR's job is to produce the "right" results for the company. Working here feels like walking on egg shells as anything you say or how you react can be misconstrued by literally anyone.

      Workday magic is long gone

      Pros

      Flexible work for select teams

      Cons

Circa 2019/2020 Workday took a dramatic downhill turn. Employees stopped being the #1 value and essentially were removed from the equation. The guiding principle of Workmates as the number one value nosedived straight over a cliff and keeping up with the Jones took its place. If you are a new hire, you probably think Workday is still pretty cool. Great, enjoy it for two years and move on. If you have been there more than 5 years, I bet you wish you could hit rewind. Workday went bad when it started hiring new leadership, who in turn brought all of their old culture and colleagues from VMware, Western Union, ETC… With this came an alienation of tenured employees, and penchant for new practices without reviewing their purpose, and a new fear-based leadership style. If you’re not prepared to suck up to the Leader DuJour, be prepared to move on. Last warning: if you work for a support organization (A Non Dev employee, AKA grunt workers) including BT, Workplace, or People and Purpose speaking up will likely get you terminated, even if its part of one of those ‘confidential’ pulse surveys. Workday had so much of its own magic if only it had continued to build on that. Alas, C-suite relied on what other companies were doing regardless of what was best for Workday.

      Too many lies

      Software engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

It was a great team before mass layoffs with big plans for the future.

      Cons

Workday management made significant layoffs in Prague, about 45% of people were laid off in 2025, mostly recent hires. R&D of People Analytics, the principal product developed in Prague has been expanding into India in 2025 just after layoffs, which is a typical red flag and could mean the company wants to outsource all of it eventually to India with proper knowledge transfer which cannot take place in an instant. Any new hire risks being hired just to keep the lights on for the transfer. Numerous people left the company who were not impacted by layoffs as they stopped believing in management. Even engineering director left. Much of the technical aspects of People Analytics are Workday specific and will not be relevant for your next job. The solution is quite convoluted with a lot of unused dead code that should have been removed many years ago. Do not expect any revolution or make a significant contribution to get a promotion. After the layoffs it's a keep the lights on type of project. This company managed to trick a big number of skilled engineers into joining it, laying them all off after a few months or a year for more lucky ones. This will very negatively reflect on their CVs and careers. Workday Prague has no reputation left. Workday values is a lie, the company is just looking to exploit your knowledge and dump you when no longer needed, same as other companies. If you are considering joining Workday Prague, seriously consider what happened to previous new joiners and whether a project with risk of being moved to India is worth joining.

      - Some woeful middle managers. It seems you can be terrible at what you do as long as you have a smile on your face. - Senior management are disconnected and disingenuous. I reported a truly awful manager who has been damaging the team culture across the department for quite a while. My complaints were completely ignored and my next performance review (for the first time in many years) was marked down. - New CEO doesn't seem genuine at all. - Compensation packages are shrinking by the the minute,
