Interview
Asked me a few questions and gave me a tour around the place. In the letter they said there would be a role play activity but there didn’t seem to be any in the interview, maybe this was because the person interviewing me wasn’t very prepared themselves, but all in all it was a nice and easy interview.
I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Marks & Spencer (Lancaster, England) in Oct 2019
Interview
1. General interview with questions which left very open answers. Eg, 'What's an example of a time when you inspired others?' 'Give an example of a time you came up with a new idea/way of doing something' 'What do you think customers expect/what does good customer service look like?' 'Why do you want to work here' (and other questions- whereabouts are you at in life? What are your current goals?')
Interviewer then left the room for 2 minutes, came back in and said I had passed the first section. She then said she thought I better suited shop floor role rather than the Warehouse so she changed my application accordingly, which I did not appreciate. I asked why out of curiosity and she didn't give a real explanation as to why I didn't fit the role I had applied for, so I was denied the opportunity to try for the Store Warehouse operative task.
2. I then was presented the task of performing a sales pitch for a new burger they had recently made, as well as upselling some other stuff like salad/beer/wine which had special deals. I was given 9-10 minutes to prepare then 5 minutes to present. I was also given paper to make notes. Make small notes to memorise stuff but DO NOT actually look at them during the sales pitch. They want you to maintain eye contact 100% of the time, it's more important than remembering the details.
So basically... expect them to randomly switch your application for another role... and just cope.
