Software Engineer Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate in Salt Lake City, UT
Declined Offer

Average Interview

Application

I applied online. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at MasterControl (Salt Lake City, UT) in February 2019.

Interview

A phone interview then onsite panel interview then offer came and I declined it. It was many weeks of sitting in the dark. I had reached out a few time to the recruiter but she never responded until they made their decision. Overall I thought they were very unorganized and gunshy to make a decision so I went with a different company. I had already been working for a month when I got a call from the recruiter telling me they had an offer for me.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at MasterControl (Cottonwood Heights, UT) in February 2015.

    Interview

Campus interview with coding questions and simple "How good of a coder do you think you are", followed by a follow up interview at the office which was just personality questions and meeting people. A tour of the office was given and that was all.

    Interview Questions

    • How would you write a query to return customer XXX's last name and salary? (given a small table)   Answer Question

    Negotiation

They allowed a little bit of negotiating but were not able to come up as far as a competitor which is why I declined.

    Easy Interview

    Application

I applied online. I interviewed at MasterControl (Salt Lake City, UT) in April 2017.

    Interview

Great response from HR/Recruiter, was then asked to follow up with a Skype interview with the 4 development Managers. Only 2 showed up (one being 10 mins late), and they were not prepared at all for web interview. Was asked a few questions, with their audio kicking in and out, and one coding question. I was asked to write some pseudo-code on paper, then email a picture of it to them. There was no discussion of my solution at all. By the time I finished the problem (maybe 5 mins) one of the managers had left, and I was informed that because this was over the web, they could not give me their normal QA problem all the other applicants receive. That was it.

Everyone I talked with was super nice, and the company seemed to have great work conditions. I do wish they would have invited me to an in-person interview (I live a few hours away).

If you are applying from a different city, I would highly recommend insisting on an in-person interview.

    Interview

It started out with the typical phone interview. Afterwards I was told they'd reach out to me within the next week to let me know if they wanted to bring me in. Few months later never heard back at all.

    Interview

The process is dysfunctional. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Multiple phone interviews/schedulings and an online tech assessment.
The in person interview is a panel with dev team and a straightforward programming exercise in an IDE. Then several more 1:1’s. Most of it is just going through your resume.
The people are nice. They should fix this bad process. Empower the stakeholders to make hiring decisions. At a minimum, put everyone in the same room.
