I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Petco (Buffalo, NY) in Apr 2009
Interview
I had applied through their on-line application several times with no response - I was able to get an interview by having a current employee speak to her manager. I was contacted via phone (on a Sunday night!) for an interview the following Thursday. I went dressed well in a suit and thought I had a great interview/conversation about my passion for animals and animal care and my work experience in the field. He seemed very enthusiastic about my application, too. Alas, I never heard back from him even after I called to follow-up.
