Goodwill of the Finger Lakes is a caring, local person-centered nonprofit organization who does a lot of good across the Greater Rochester community and the Finger Lakes Region.
From the beginning, Goodwill’s mission has promoted job creation for the disenfranchised. Founded by Methodist Minister Edgar J. Helms in 1902, Goodwill gave people with disabilities and other social barriers the opportunity to find meaningful work. Goodwill allowed the disadvantaged to earn a wage by repairing and repurposing discarded household items and then selling them back to the community at affordable prices.
Following that model, Goodwill North Central Texas was founded in 1949. By giving underserved people in Tarrant County and surrounding areas the job training they need to achieve maximum independence, Goodwill is a hand up, not a hand out.
The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest, largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, the top two causes of mortality in the world.
Founded by six cardiologists in 1924 and now in our 100th year, our organization includes more than 3,000 employees and more than 30 million volunteers and supporters working tirelessly to make a difference. We fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies and provide vital tools to save and improve lives.
We work in more than 100 countries. We’re the nation’s leader in CPR education training. We help people understand the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. We provide science-based treatment guidelines to healthcare professionals to help ensure the best treatment for every patient, every time. We educate policymakers and the public as we advocate for healthcare and community change to protect and improve the health of everyone, everywhere.
World Vision is an independent private Christian organization that holds faith in Jesus Christ as central to our identity, motivation, and calling to serve communities in need. It all started in 1947, when founder Bob Pierce, when gave the last $5 in his pocket to a missionary orphanage for the care of an abandoned Chinese girl. Since Bob founded World Vision more than 70 years ago, we have gone places others would not, and done tasks others could not. Today, we continue to work in the places where it is hardest to be a child because we believe that is where we are needed most.
For more than six decades our agency has maintained a collaborative relationship with its local communities and schools to support adults and children experiencing mental health difficulties and other challenges. A group of concerned residents and educators recognized the need for mental health services in our area and joined forces in 1958 to help form The Guidance Center. Since then we have worked as a team to respond to the needs of children, adults and families in southeast Michigan.
The agency operates a wide range of programs and services at 18 locations. Our expertise in mental health and wellness, early childhood education, intellectual & developmental disabilities services and support, mentoring, substance-use disorders, Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center, Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), Nurture the Future, and research and evaluation helps more than 16,000 children and adults annually work on their own personal triumphs in life.
In October 2021, The Guidance Center was selected by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to participate in its five-year Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) demonstration pilot. TGC is one of only thirteen community mental health agencies in the state of Michigan selected for this pilot. The rigorous certification process verified TGC as meeting all 125 of the national standards required of CCBHC service providers by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
