Mission Patagonia’s Mission Statement: We Are in Business to Save Our Home Planet.
Description Ventura, CA - 1973. Our founder, Yvon Chouinard expanded Chouinard Equipment to include clothing for mountain pursuits. The following year, our involvement in environmental activism began when Patagonia employees protested against a proposed development threatening a Ventura surf break. As the company grew, we built a wider range of multifunctional, durable gear, partnered with mills to make innovative fabrics, introduced on-site childcare and began donating 1% of sales to protect wild spaces.
At Patagonia, we get that all life on Earth is under threat of extinction. We’re using the resources we have—our business, our investments, our voice and our imagination—to do something about it.
We continue to live and work by our core values: Quality, Integrity, Environmentalism, Justice, Not Bound by Convention.
In September 2022, nearly 50 years after Yvon Chouinard began his experiment in responsible business, he transferred ownership of Patagonia to the Patagonia Purpose Trust and the nonprofit Holdfast Collective. Now and into the future, every dollar that is not reinvested into the company will be distributed as dividends to the Holdfast Collective to protect the planet.
