InnovaSystems is a leading provider of information technology and software solutions for the DoD, federal, state, and local government agencies. Headquartered in San Diego, California, our success has provided us with new opportunities year after year since the company was founded in 1997. InnovaSystems is not content with the status quo; rather, we are inspired to innovate, design solutions, and create those solutions that engage the user. We provide an essential and vital service to support our National Security Strategy (NSS) through enterprise-level solutions that are more effective, accessible, and efficient while maintaining a lower cost than our competitors. Our focus is to provide quality enterprise solutions with an emphasis in Agile and Iterative Development; Data Management; Business Intelligence; System Architecture; Mobile Development; Premier Customer Service and Design at a competitive cost. We develop organizational effectiveness and readiness by optimizing disparate data sources and operational systems resulting in reduced costs, increased effectiveness, and accessibility.

Where We Started…

InnovaSystems was co-founded in 1997 by Chris Wollerman (CEO) and Lynn Hutton (CFO) in San Diego, CA. After spending 10 years working for large defense contractors, they set out to establish a different kind of company based on a set of core values and philosophy for developing software solutions. The principle-centered values focus on relationships and include specific behaviors around trust, passion, and teamwork. The name InnovaSystems comes from our value of innovation in our products, services and processes.

InnovaSystems is one of the first DoD contractors to incorporate an Agile approach to software development by partnering with the customer, working side by side with them on-site at military installations around the world, and delivering products in short iterations. The agile approach provides high value to the customer by offering the flexibility of evolving requirements while incorporating best practices for developing world class enterprise systems.

Where We Are Going…

Although we have grown into a large business, we maintain the small, family-oriented culture. To continue to thrive as a business, we continue to look ahead and understand the trends and environment that shape our direction in the future and move us swiftly to prepare for what lies ahead. We will continue to expand our reach and partner with customers who recognize our expertise to deliver a better solution. For customers such as the DoD, we will continue to deploy more rapid, flexible, innovative, and lower cost solutions to replace many of their expensive, outdated, duplicative, ineffective, or wasteful systems. We will diversify beyond our current DoD projects to help other branches of the military and other agencies that support the NSS. We will provide mobile-enabled, enterprise tools to help the work force become more effective at strategic execution. We have the leadership philosophy, toolset, and know-how to create world-class solutions that can help many organizations to achieve their goals.

    Pros

    This company is a great place to thrive, learn, and build leadership skills. They are open to a lot of the ideas their employees suggest. I have suggested quite a few things that they have let me run with and organize which has had a huge impact on my professional development. I learn so much and build so many skills every year I work here.

    Everyone is extremely friendly. The company promotes cross team collaboration and likes to make sure their employees have several opportunities to build relationships and get to know each other. They have a strong focus on keeping their employees happy. The company also has a lot of practices in place that help ensure you have a great relationship with your supervisor. This was a big deal for me after having a few not-so-great experiences with supervisors at past jobs.

    I also appreciate the fact that everyone I work with is very smart and really knows their area of expertise. There are great mentors for just about any career direction.

    You get to set your own schedule and have the opportunity to flex time and save on vacation days. The benefits are really good.

    Cons

    Like any company, there are a few people that are set in their ways and a few strong personalities, but I've seen many of those people on my team slowly change over the years. It is very process driven, but they can't really avoid that as a DoD contractor. There are some weird dynamics between satisfying your project needs vs company overhead requirements, but there's still a silver lining here. The company overhead requirements are there to make sure you are focused on reaching big goals three times a year as well as maintaining a good relationship with your supervisor and direct reports.

    There are varied opinions on work/life balance here. You sort of set the tone for that yourself based on the goals you set and the things you initiate. I work a lot, which has been a personal choice since I see personal value in what I've chosen to do here. Once you start something, they'll expect you to continue doing it.     Advice to Management

    There's a bit of a push for everyone to read from the company selected reading list, however, a lot of the concepts can be found in other books that better align to certain industries and/or departments. It's good to have the suggested reading list, but it would be nice to promote reading anything that aligns to the company direction to promote a wider variety of perspectives. I've wondered if it looks bad that I haven't read any of the company suggested books, but I've got a backlog of industry suggested books I really want to get through, and thoroughly enjoy reading, that would still benefit to the company.

    As different individuals read different books, we can all talk about different lessons learned from each, rather than all digesting the same content.
