Worst company I've ever worked for

Pros

There is nothing good I can say about Checkout.com

Cons

Checkout.com is simply the worst run company I have ever experienced. The leadership team is made up of incompetent people who simply say yes to anything Guillaume (CEO) says and are unable to think for themselves. The culture at the company is extremely toxic and everyone is only interested in protecting themselves. Coworkers are resistant to provide any help outside of their direct responsibilities. Leadership also chooses favorites and if you are not on that list you will not grow your career here. If you care at all about your career you should run, not walk, far away from Checkout.com

Pros

Generally nice and clever people Nice offices

Cons

- My mental health suffered whilst at Checkout and by the time I left I was unhappy and burned out. The workload and hours required are unsustainable. Checkout spend a lot of time talking about mental health but don't do the one thing which would actually improve people's mental health, which is to ensure that workloads are reasonable/ sustainable. - Working is day is 9-6 which is unusually long (and that is still not long enough to do your work!) - So many meetings, so little time left to work - Brutal performance reviews with many excellent people unfairly given low ratings. - Recently made 100 people redundant en masse on a video call, a horrible way to manage bad news. Avoidable, too, if they hadn't enthusiastically overhired all year - No transparency about company results/ performance. - Equity package that was awarded recently is going to be pretty much worthless and based on an inflated company valuation. They try to make everyone feeling like they're part of this amazing journey, and everyone works so hard to meet the company's goals, but none of the regular employees are going to win financially from Checkout's success. And that's fine, but just be honest about it rather than trying to push this culture of 'we're all in it together on this exciting journey'. A few at the top will get hugely wealthy, the rest of the company will get burnout and nothing to show for it. - Existing employees struggle to get paid market rate, pay rises are severely even when promoted. Leaving is more lucrative for most. - Bonuses inconsistently awarded, if at all - People get fired for unproven allegations about inappropriate behaviour. Therefore people are super-worried about saying something that could be interpreted as offensive so regular social interaction can feel strained and awkward. - Staff turnover is high, many people will leave within their first year or less. Many people leave without something to go to because they are burned out - Reviews on here are skewed towards the positive as they push people to write reviews at the end of the (very good) induction programme. They will respond and say that they're only asking people to review the onboarding process, but that definitely isn't how it comes across. The honeymoon period wears off FAST - I should have left sooner, not sure how I stayed so long, but my health and happiness have transformed now I'm out!

Dumpster fire fueled by bad leadership

Pros

- Compensation is fair - NYC office is beautiful - Free lunch

Cons

Most of the problems at Checkout.com stem from bad senior leadership that promote favoritism and blame culture. They have had multiple rounds of layoffs and yet none of the senior leaders have changed, despite most being incompetent and unqualified to lead an organization. Leadership is not looking for creative thinking or ambition and only want people to blindly follow their orders. They do not accept feedback or allow you to question their decisions. This has created a culture in which everyone is beaten down and simply enduring their day-to-day work. There is no collaboration and everyone is only looking out for their own interests. There are re-orgs every few months so you never have stability or visibility into long term goals. Leadership will set simple-minded goals, such as "grow by X%", without any plans or details around how to achieve this. They will then throw individuals under the bus to save themselves when they do not achieve these outlandish goals. When people leave, they do not backfill the roles, forcing everyone else into an unrealistic workload. If you value yourself or your career you will stay clear of Checkout.com.
