Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

Company went through pains in 2020-21, but now heading in the right direction

    Pros

Strong respect for people culture; Collaborative; Fully Remote workforce; Stable customer base / recurring revenue; Mature company; Customers do amazing things with our products, solving useful problems; Finally getting our footing again after a few years of turmoil

    Cons

Fully remote workforce; Turnover in 2020 & 2021 left some teams with a skills gap, or under resourced.

    Opportunities and Challenges

    Nov 3, 2022 - Sales
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Strong technology and good culture where you are treated like an adult. New leadership listens to field. Opportunities to grow and shine if you put in the effort.

    Cons

the product plays in so many areas (search, document DB, graph, etc.) that it is difficult to focus on a segment and explain what it can do . Strong competition from cloud vendors, lack of market awareness, long/technical sales cycle all make for a challenging sale.

Reinventing itself after a slow period

    Aug 29, 2022 - Director
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good technology, unique and interesting technology, big and impactful uses by customers.

    Cons

Prior engineering group packed in so many features that MarkLogic does not now know exactly what it does or should do. Text, NoSQL, integration, semantics, etc are all in the core.

Used to be the best. Not anymore.

    May 25, 2022 - Anonymous Employee
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

all of the pros aren't applicable anymore: good wlb, great communication, fun / caring atmosphere. now, this incredible company is being drained for cash. it's sad to see it happen to what once used to be a desirable place to work.

    Cons

    - benefits aren't that good anymore - all of the mental health incentives got cut (probably the first red flag) - pay isn't good for what they put you through emotionally - since the acquisition, wlb has gone downhill especially since all of the good engineers left or got laid off - everyone is very burnt out, and management could care less - "unlimited pto" is bs since there is so much to do but not enough people. they need to hire more people to accomplish what they're trying to do, but have had numerous rounds of lay offs? doesn't look good for the future

    Great manager, great technology

    Apr 13, 2022 - Software Engineer
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Very powerful distributed, parallelized, multi-model database

    Cons

bridging the gap between MarkLogic server as a platform and end user development -- tooling. The ML Data Hub concept is a good one, but bridging ML server capabilities to end user application access not requiring detailed knowledge of ML technology itself is still a challenge.

    Beware

Feb 9, 2022 - Software Engineering in San Carlos, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    * It used to be really good * You can comfortably get by doing very little work with very little oversight due to technically incompetent management. Play video games all day if you want to. * Beware positive reviews with very little detail

    Cons

    * New leadership from 2020 and on is clueless * Promoting the wrong products and features * A lot of money and time wasted on a cloud product that was decommissioned * Customers angry and fleeing * Hardly any new business coming in * Push to offload engineering work to near shore contractors creates job insecurity. Other departments with this problem too * Just acquired a failing company with no strategic vision to integrate it * Top employees all left since new management came in across all levels of company
