Bleeding-edge technology, supporting leadership, and best team: one of its kind

Aug 10, 2021 - Software Engineering Manager in San Carlos, CA

      Pros

      - The product is one of its kind. Leading the DB industry. Very cool technology. - The leadership team is very experienced. - More importantly, they care and grow each individual. Making sure people are excited, motivated and awarded. - The teams are well structured and functioning. Not only engineering, but across the company on both business side and technical side. - Work-life balance is top tier in the industry.

      Cons

Not much I can think of. Be brave and bold, be the tech giant, solving the world's problems.

      Cons

Still completing the transition under new leadership, but promising Earlier tech leadership ignored some tech issues, creating tech debt

      Love the People

      Pros

The people who work here are some of the brightest and supportive people. I rarely have a negative thought towards a coworker. The number one reason I hear time and again why it's a great place to work.

      Cons

Cost cutting has started to take a toll on people. You can only work with minimum resources and budget for so long before you start thinking about how green the grass is elsewhere.

      Good Tech, Bad Outlook

Oct 6, 2020 - Engineer in San Carlos, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

WLB depends on the product area, but generally excellent. Lower management, in my experience, is wonderful. They want you to succeed and are open to feedback. The database technology is second to none. Current CEO is an industry veteran and was able to really turn the company around after previous CEO royally screwed up the company. Friendly and good natured people. It really does feel like this company should succeed given how good the tech is, so it's painful to see the company unable to grow. And there is a massive portfolio of government, bank, and insurance customers, and we have a very frugal CFO ... it will be hard for the company to go under.

      Cons

Feels like there is no excitement in the company anymore. All employees employed 5 years ago are now gone, mass exodus of talent over last 3 years. It doesn't feel like same company anymore. CEO has disappeared. No new talent wants to work here. We don't get updates on how company is doing. Core technical engineering problems all solved, nothing left to learn; Founder will solve core problems if any come up. Feels like there is no way to grow a technical career here. People aren't motivated. Too hard for new customers to understand the technology and our APIs. Benefits are mediocre, 401k match is up to 2k.

Highly disqualified engineering leadership should have changed

Dec 5, 2020 - Software Engineer in San Carlos, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

There are still very few smart and capable engineers stay though most have left. The New acquisition and CEO could bring some fundamental changes like eradicating micro management, firing those incapable, selfish, biased, stereotyped managers/directors/VP without deep domain/technology skill and leadership.

      Cons

Management has been the greatest weakness. A small company needs directors that have very strong technical background and is capable of leading roadmaps, architecture design, and even detailed implementation. They are not those who only know how to schedule meetings, and ask your status, and over-emphasize agile paradigm to show their existence and value. Even worse, they try to make games for how to control subordinates and abused so-called power. The micromanagement can only discourage the morale of the whole team. They should be technical mentors whom the team members can learn from and gain respectful.
