I worked at Sequenom (Less than a year)

    Pros

    They hire just about anyone

    Cons

Because they hire anyone they end up with a ton of people who are incompetent and vindictive. There are a lot of politics in this job. It does not matter what you know its who you brown nose to

    Advice to Management

Get your head out of your rear ends. You never speak to anyone and you need to start listening to your workers. It will make you a happier person.

I have been working at Sequenom full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exceptional Learning opportunities, friendly people, generous compensation, nice location, great amenities like gym, coffee/tea, social and professional opportunities, career advancement.

    Cons

So far I have no cons. The drive is a bit rough, but that's Southern California in general. Commuting adds 2+ hours to my day in total.

    Pros

Work environment when I was hired two months ago seemed very stoic. Maybe that was just how I see things being new. I will say in the past month everyone seems to have a bit more bounce in the step with smiles.

    Cons

Starting salary was not competitive..but that is on me.

    Advice to Management

I enjoy the smiles and a happy work environment. Keep it up!

I have been working at Sequenom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Love my team, smart people, advancing the practice of medicine/patient experience.

    Cons

Microscopic budget and understaffing lead to very high turnover and makes for a stressful work environment. Culture is one of NO ENTHUSIASM.

    Advice to Management

Hire experts to help you figure out what to spend on what. Board, exec team have never run a company, so stop looking to them only for answers...

    Pros

    Good salary, challenging work environment

    Cons

You have to be self motivated. NO ONE will hold your hand and tell you that you're doing a great job. If you need constant affirmations from management, this company isn't for you.

    Pros

Great coworkers (mostly), Positive outlook (mostly), excellent management (mostly)

    Cons

Bad eggs and the home branch in San Diego ran the company into the ground through poor decisions and a lack of retention focus.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to one with business sense

I have been working at Sequenom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible, good team, great products, good base salary.

    Cons

Everyone works in a silo. Customer service team is is a very sad state. Losing customers because of people not being accountable, not completing very simple tasks. Bonuses are pretty terrible.

    Advice to Management

Double the customer service team. Assign CS reps to high volume territories, not to entire regions. No one is accountable right now. No one is closing SMIRF cases. TAT is abysmal. Never seen it this bad for this long.

I worked at Sequenom full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large department budgets. Given the tools and resources to get projects done. Good soft benefits like parties and FitBit challanges. Transparent management. Great products.

    Cons

Senior management squandered their first mover advantage through scandals and constantly missing out on reading and reacting to a fast changing market Sequenom basically built from the ground up. Typical viotile biotech, could be ramping for growth or laying off impossible to feel any sense of security. Facilities in San Diego feel dated and those hallway pictures are off-putting. No parking after 9am. Lots of waste spent on projects that never needed to done in the first place. Revolving door leads to pet projects being pitched and abandoned mid stream.

    Advice to Management

Disassociate from the past , change the company name. Find a partner that can take NIPT and commercialize it profitably. Always have more than one person in critical roles too much brain drain. Too many incoherent projects that all do the same thing which is a huge waste of money...unless they outright fail, be more dictitorial in choosing what projects get funded. RETENTION, RETENTION, RETENTION!

I worked at Sequenom full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People are great, location is fantastic if you like the Torrey Pines area. Lunch trucks can be delicious. Some underground parking to keep your paint job classy. Towel service in the gym.

    Cons

Really bad management practices, there is an overwhelming feeling of distrust once you get in. Very top-heavy for absolutely no reason. Turnaround is rampant, morale is constantly sinking. The pictures on the wall are creepy and make no sense.

    Advice to Management

Take some integrity classes and communicate effectively to your employees. You are likely not as personally important to the process as they are. Try cutting back on all the meetings, most of them can be replaced by an email. Yearly reviews are way more important, put some more thought into that. Take those hideous pictures out of the hallway. So weird.
