    Pros

Great co-workers, freedom to share ideas

    Cons

Grew quickly, hard to keep up employee morale with turnover.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to your people. It’s the workers in the trenches that know what the obstacles are.

I worked at Smart & Final full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great sense of making a difference where I went as a manager and how I impacted the overall conditions of the store.

    Cons

Low opportunity of growth. Poor choices of who is chosen to be a store director or above based on seniority or friends of higher ups. I have strong managerial skills and interpersonal relationship/team building strategies to accomplish major company goals.

    Advice to Management

Be stronger when it comes to associate development and promote those who deserve it, they will stay longer and will do great things for you.

    Cons

3 half days of training then you're on your own
Your job experience is dependent on your management, if you like them it'll be good, if you don't it makes the job harder

I worked at Smart & Final full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

401k matches 50% of what one puts in.

    Cons

Too much to do, not enough staffing and cashiers, rampant call outs by favorites. Schedules can change in a whim.

    Advice to Management

Need more cashiers and staff! Cut out the people that always call out, get more registers and more people. 90% of the problems can be solved through staffing alone.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have bee working as a cashier for 2 years and we have great customer service and hours are flexible.

    Cons

Need more clerks in day and night, need more cashiers. Store is always dirty. Some of the co-workers are not nice and they always spent time in their phone than doing work. The ice-cream's are always soft instead of hard. There is a cashier who is really slow and a lot of customers are complaining about her. There are a lot of pallets that are outside and no one puts them inside which its not healthy at all. There is a clerk who doesn't care at all about the store, she is always rude and doesn't do very well at her job. I had this experience when I told her my opinion on something and she just told the I'm not the manager and she scoffed which is very rude.

    Advice to Management

I will advice to my manager to be more responsible on the workers when they need an emergency off. Another thing that I will advice is that we need lockers to put our things away. Need more Ice on weekends with different pounds as in 10 and 20 pounds of ice.

I have been working at Smart & Final part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most store managers are very flexible with your schedules. They now offer benefits for those who work over a certain amount of hours.

    Cons

The biggest con with this company is that most employees do not feel as appreciated by management. While this does not apply to all, it does seem to be the case with most. The company doesn't seem to offer as much opportunities to grow within unless you plan on staying years with the company.

    Advice to Management

Try showing your employees that they are appreciated even if the gesture is small is goes a long way.
