I worked at Sony Electronics full-time

    Pros

Great people and great products. Making progress in premium television business. Sony is making a comeback refocusing on delivering innovative, quality products. A departure from past years where they were trying to be too much to too many.

    Cons

Tokyo plays significant role in managing US sales & marketing. Little autonomy for US product marketing and sales.

I have been working at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Reasonable positions for young professionals to get their foot in the door for a 2 year stint... get a name on a resume and move on to somewhere with advancement opportunities. All the good talent has left so don't be looking for a mentor but as people still remember the name from when it was synonymous with product quality use that to create a foundation and then more to somewhere more technologically relevant.

    Cons

Currently spinning off all business as selling the name no more VAIO computers, BRAVIA TVs... If you are working they are squeezing for everything you have got. Reason being, t have saleable P&L overhead (people for ex) must be as low as possible. You will get stretched beyond all reasonable bandwidth only so management can wrap your unit in a nice package to investors. Your actual contribution is no longer going towards the battle for market share vs Samsung, Apple and Google. Its going towards showing productivity w minimal investment. i.e. don't expect a merit increase. Before mgnt spends money on that they will spend it on sw to get the data warehouses up to date. Everything is just modifications and patchwork now. Very tough business environment for someone looking to have a career w advancement opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Although i am sure they know this by now; it is just too late... The lack of innovation and agility are just as ingrained in the culture as the business unit silos and the slow turn around for idea to become products. Playing catch up is not your game. Cut losses on current business and use current resources to skip already in production products (VR) and CREATE the next market. See further ahead.. the catch up game is a losing battle. Or to quote yourself - a race to the bottom.
