Our Women’s Impact Network (WIN) Employee Resource Group hosted an event for our #DifferenceMakers featuring the dynamic women of the CareFirst Executive Leadership team, including Meryl Burgin, Angela Celestin, Dori Henderson (Dorothea Henderson on LinkedIn), Rose Megian and Jenny Smith. Employees from all over the organization, including our President and CEO Brian D. Pieninck joined WIN for an interactive discussion about nuanced topics like wisdom, growth and success. Our Difference Makers left the event with important insights, career advice and had the opportunity to share their own stories and experiences with their coworkers. A big thank you to all who attended and to WIN for hosting this terrific event.

A recent visit to the Eastern Shore reinforced CareFirst’s commitment as a community leader and champion of health equity throughout the region. Members of our External Affairs, CareFirst Engagement Center, and Community Health and Social Impact teams joined Board Member and Mission Oversight Committee Chair Kevin Beverly to meet with leadership of the Cambridge Boys and Girls Club and Delmarva Community Services, Inc. Participants gathered for discussions about community needs, existing programs, new initiatives and expansion projects. We’re looking forward to continued progress in our Eastern Shore communities.
Medication nonadherence is a major issue in the healthcare industry. According to the CDC, as many as 50% of medications are not taken as prescribed. Additionally, the CDC estimates that 30-50% of chronic disease treatment failures are caused by medication nonadherence, as well as 125,000 deaths in the United States each year. Our partnership with Scene Health, a Baltimore-based medication engagement company, is bringing virtual medication management to members of CareFirst's Community Health Plan of Maryland. Patients can access coaching through both video and texts.
The CareFirst Engagement Center brings healthcare into the heart of Baltimore, connecting our community to the care they need. Learn more about the important work the CareFirst Engagement Center does:
We're excited to announce our new value-based care partnership with Ryse Health (Ryse) to better health outcomes for CareFirst members with diabetes! Ryse came to our organization originally as part of our joint startup incubator with LifeBridge Health, 1501 Health. Their approach to diabetes care includes preventative care and personalized care coordination with each patient. By creating a value-based care partnership with Ryse, we are incentivizing improved health outcomes over the number of people seen with the goal of more efficient provider-patient relationships and lower overall healthcare costs. Bringing the 1501 Health innovators back into the industry to serve our region is why we started this joint venture, and we're thrilled to see it coming full circle. We hope to continue bringing many more healthcare solutions to our members in the future.
In 2022, CareFirst contributed $24 million benefiting 385 nonprofit organizations and 400,000 individuals in Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., to reach vulnerable populations and address the root causes of health disparities. In addition to partnering with nonprofit organizations to realize our mission of accessible and affordable healthcare for all, CareFirst encourages employees to have a direct impact on the health and wellness of the people we promise to serve. Last year, employees logged over 48,000 volunteer hours across the region and contributed more than $820,000 to organizations, including the @American Heart Association, @First Fruits Farm, Inc., @Moveable Feast, @Special Olympics Maryland, local @United Way chapters, and more. #CareFirstCares
We’re incredibly honored to be the inaugural recipient of the @Greater Washington Urban League's (GWUL) Equity Impact Award. This award recognizes partners of GWUL who champion equity and employ strategies that have resulted in investment and allyship for marginalized communities. As a longstanding partner of GWUL, we work together to increase opportunities for underserved and under-resourced communities in the Mid-Atlantic region. On Friday morning, Kimberly Harris, our director of community health and social impact for the National Capital Area, accepted the award at GWUL's 3rd Annual Equity in Black & White Summit. The event brought together leaders from around the region to find new ways to create systemic change. #CareFirstCares
