Does Petco offer family leave?

Pros

I loved spending time with the animals - learning about them and caring for them - and helping guests find the perfect pet for them. Building guest loyalty and providing great service was very rewarding.

Cons

My store leader was atrocious. While very knowledgeable about the business, and most of the animals we worked with, she was a personnel nightmare. I faced terrible treatment, bordering on abuse and discrimination, during my pregnancy, and had to go to Human Resources and upper management upon my return from maternity leave in order to establish a healthy routine for pumping. I know I am not alone in my experiences, as fellow coworkers had heard her use degrading and cruel language - the R slur included. Totally unacceptable.

Advice to Management

Realize that in order for your employees to deliver the results you want, you need to support them with the staffing levels, materials and pay they need to be successful. Enough of the bare minimum staffing and expectation that we can do more with less. Your employees are worn out and underpaid. Finally, listen to your employees. When your turnover is astronomical and you've received multiple ethics hotline calls about a Leader...maybe that leader needs to go.

Does Petco offer a wellness program?

Pros

The company has decent Employee support programs and gives out benefits like bonuses and financial help. They care more about the animals than most other chains do, but they're not without their flaws.

Cons

The pay is quite honestly terrible, and the company refuses to be competitive with other retail stores in terms of compensation. It is nearly impossible to get a raise without switching job titles, and even that doesn't always work. You won't be properly compensated for the effort spent on going outside of your job duties to better progress the store and help out as needed. If you are trained in multiple areas of the store, like myself, don't expect a raise for doing so. Don't expect your pay to increase while working in the company. Long term employees are typically paid the same, if not a a few cents or are dollar above new hires (if you are lucky). They care more about aesthetics and variety than truly proper husbandry and push stores to carry animals like Savannah Monitors, Iguanas, Chinese Hi-Fin Sharks (this fish gets 4 feet long and needs to be in a school. Only Zoos can support this animal long term) among other large and unreasonable pets. Petco does not allow the use of actual fish medications that are proven to work. They only allow natural, holistic medications.

Advice to Management

Pay should be more competitive, and current employees should be prioritized in the roll-out. Allow us to give Chinchillas Chinchillers, especially in the summer time. They cannot survive the summers in some of our stores due to not being allowed to put chillers our other means of cooling in their habitat. Bring back eco-earth substrate so our humidity builds up. The reptibark just gives us puddles. End the use of calci-sand. It compacts, gets hard and cases a mess all over the animals when they soak in their water dish.

The company has decent Employee support programs and gives out benefits like bonuses and financial help.
