What is overtime like at Starbucks?

Relevant Glassdoor Reviews

February 2, 2022

Pros

Flexible scheduling, great coworkers, benefits and college are good though I didn't use them.

Cons

Corporate pressure, pay does not match the work you are asked to do, consistent understaffing, power crazed superiors, don't expect to ever have a properly staffed floor after "peak," customers are consistently rude and entitled, low tips compared to other Coffee jobs, mandatory holiday availability, discouraged from working overtime, rarely scheduled for hours you were hired for, expectation to cover shifts to get up to requested hours, inconsistent scheduling, weekend availability required, transphobic managers, openly anti-vax district managers, corporate loves performative activism, don't expect to move up unless you kiss up to your superiors. Valid concerns are not welcomed at Starbucks, do not rock the boat.

Advice to Management

pay your workers more, and atleast pretend you value your employees as much as you pretend to value costumers. Stop union busting, make Kevin Johnson step down as CEO and get someone remotely component to run things.

Pros

Benefits are good and the pay is competitive.

Cons

Several ethics violations and health code violations left and right, upper management does not care despite saying they do. Store managers work only a handful of hours a week (mostly in meetings) and do not support their employees who are working overtime to make ends meet, as the company is short-staffed as a whole. Limited growth opportunities unless you stay with the company for several years (typically 5-10).

Advice to Management

Actually listen to your employees instead of just saying you do. Checks and balances on management will grow the numbers, not just letting them overwork the employees. There's a reason why all these stores are unionizing after all.

Pros

Great benefits Great friendships with other partners

Cons

Management gaslights you into the importance of job, like its life or death Everyone except store managers are considered part time so they don't have to pay overtime. Had to work sick because manager wouldn't relieve me on her "days off" and wouldn't let anyone else work overtime to cover me Other partners weren't allowed to take vacation to celebrate Christmas because it would result in overtime for other partners. One supervisor was denied going to a family funeral because their manager wouldn't cover their shift

Advice to Management

All the stores should be unionized.
