      Software Engineer Interview

      Jan 30, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at DoorDash (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2018

      Interview

I received several unsolicited emails from a hiring manager until I finally replied. A typical phone screen followed along with a take home project. They then followed up with a five-hour on-site interview. The content of the interview was typical. There were sections on coding, architecture, past projects, and a behavioral/psych section. Most everyone was pleasant. I pretty much bombed the section during the latter half of the final hour. The problem itself was simplistic and I came to a working functional solution right away, but before I could type out a first pass, I was asked to change it. While doing this, my interviewer didn't seem to deal with silence very well. Whenever I'd spend a few seconds thinking or typing, I would be interrupted with such helpful advice as "Next, you need to do something with that loop" and "Think about what to do next." It went on & on. I tried to speak out what I was doing, to proactively avoid the interruptions, but they kept coming. When I'd get close to something, the interviewer would jump ahead, without giving an opportunity to finish. A few times I tried to engage the nonsensical ramblings, "Yes, I am aware that I need to do something with that loop. I'm thinking about if I need..." Interrupted by restating the basic problem, which is not at all what I was talking about right then. I was too tired after hours of interviewing to tolerate that nonsense, so I stopped trying after a couple minutes and sat back to watch the interviewer listen to himself talk. It ended with a quick goodbye from the internal recruiter.

      Interview

Walking into the coding interview, I was taken aback when they asked about finding the K nearest restaurants based on coordinates. Just days before, I had stumbled on a mock on prachub.com that mirrored this question almost exactly. The interview felt straightforward, but I struggled with some behavioral questions. Overall, the experience was underwhelming; I expected more technical depth. After several rounds, they decided to go in another direction, which was disappointing given my prep efforts.
