      Technical Support Specialist Interview

      Nov 21, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at PagerDuty (San Francisco, CA) in Oct 2015

      Interview

Very swift and positive interview experience! Submitted application online and got an email within 2-3 days from the lead recruiter to set up an introductory phone call; phone screen lasted 30 minutes and included basic questions (why are you in search of a new opportunity, walk me through your day-to-day). After the phone screen, I got an email from the recruiting coordinator to schedule some time for another phone call with the managers. Manager call (with Director and Tier 1 Support Manager) also lasted 30 minutes; their questions were more specific to the role (what are some of the tools you use everyday, how do you stay organized/prioritize your tasks) and they asked for writing samples at the end of the call. Shortly after sending over my samples, I was invited for a 3-hour onsite interview. I was advised to sign up for a PagerDuty trial account (prior to the onsite) to get familiar with the product and read through a few of the knowledge base articles since I would be going through exercises during the interview. The onsite interview consisted of 4 one-on-one interviews with the team, including the 3 people (recruiter, director, manager) I had already spoken with over the phone. There was very little small talk as most of the interviews involved writing exercises that took up a good portion of time; I wasn't expected to work through all of the exercises, just as many as possible. Presumably the objective was to gauge writing ability and observe how I worked through certain situations (figuring out the correct answer, responding to an angry customer, etc). I had written a great deal during the interviews (including a moderate-length blog post) so I was pretty exhausted by the time I left but I was also impressed at how thorough the screening process was. All of the interviewers were efficient, kind, and provided candid answers to my questions about the role, the support team, as well as the company culture. I came away with a very positive impression of the experience overall and was delighted when they called to offer me the position a few days later.

      Interview

They wasted a lot of my time throughout this entire process. I had gotten to the final selection and at that point I had met everyone on their team and taken time off to go through their lengthy and at times very unnecessary interview waves. Like all companies it begins with a phone screening. Then an interview with some of your would be colleagues and then an interview with the head of technical support and a supervisor. They were a bit stone-faced and unpleasant to interview with for the most part. After that they had me create an essay on and IT topic and submit that. After that I needed to attend a meet and greet with the majority of the team. This was quite a few hours and a handful of meetings and time taken off of my current job in order to facilitate what they needed for a barely acceptable salary. In other words, the salary they were offering didn't match the amount of interviews, wasted time, and people I had to meet. It also seems incredible shallow and rude to meet an entire team, speak with them, tell them about yourself, your hobbies and your hopes and aspirations while STILL having a chance to be declined. After all that they still had the audacity not to hire me. I believe I made it to the final 2 or 3. The entire process took about a month, maybe more. They'll give you the usual speech about how they'll keep you in mind the next time a spot opens up. Which of course as we'll all know is them lying to your face. This process has decreased my opinion of Pagerduty immensely, and I will likely never apply to a job there again. They don't have my respect as a company and I would and will warn against interviewing there.

      Technical Support Specialist Interview

      Dec 10, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate

      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at PagerDuty (London, England) in Dec 2020

      Interview

1st step phone interview with recruiter who was the coldest person I ever spoke with, no human connection at all, just interested in getting the info he needed. He didn't even let me finish my answers as he wanted to get quickly to the next empty field. 2nd step video call interview with 2 managers, it was ok, nothing special. 3rd step written assignment, just verify your writing and communication skills about tech topics. Spent 2 hours working on it, sent one day before the deadline, rejected in 24 hours with no feedback at all, just a template. They have no respect for the time candidates spend on it.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at PagerDuty (Sydney) in Aug 2020

      Interview

The interview process is a typical interview process comprised of the following: 1. Phone screening by HR/Relevant Department Lead (Sales Recruiter lead in this case) 2. A 1 hour zoom meeting with two department leads 3. A written assignment 4. TBD Straight after I completed Stage 2, I was given the opportunity to progress with the interview process. The team lead provided me a written task to complete. All was good, they were looking forward to reading my written assignment. About a few moments later, I receive a separate email from the Sales Recruiter saying that they have filled in the role for Technical Support Specialist; they understand that I was given the written task, but proceeds to tell me to not 'work too hard' on it. It was a good learning experience for developing my interview skills, experience and I was able to do a written assignment for the first time. However, the way this interview was handled was highly unprofessional and no regard for the applicants time. There was no display of respect for a candidates time or effort. I handed in the assignment regardless, looking forward to hearing some feedback or even to hear from the Team Lead themselves they have already hired someone. I receive nothing. Completed ghosted. I like to be constructive and productive in certain situations. To ghost or completely disregard one's time and effort in the written assignment is highly disrespectful and goes backwards on the values they hold as a company. Thank you for the experience. I hope future applicants don't have to go through what I did during their career journey. Respecting people's time and effort is important in anyplace and anytime.
