      Senior Game Programmer Interview

      May 28, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Edinburgh, Scotland
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Rockstar Games (Edinburgh, Scotland) in Sep 2023

      Interview

Pros The Rockstar interview process was of medium difficulty. The initial stage was pleasant. The people during the early stages were friendly and kind. Salary expectations were communicated early on (slightly below market average). Cons I went through about two technical interviews before being invited to the office. It wasn’t clear to me that another technical interview would be waiting at the office — I expected a culture fit interview after so many technical stages. It was quite unpleasant that I wasn’t allowed inside the office or even the reception area. It was raining, and I had arrived 40 minutes early on purpose. Because of this, I went to a nearby café and immediately felt negatively toward the company. The final interview started off reasonably well — I was joined by a few engineers. However, after about 20 minutes, a senior person rushed in, and the rest of the engineers went silent. This person wasn’t interested in how I think — he wanted very specific answers to specific problems, and how he would solve them. The others said nothing. His tone was unpleasant and overly forceful. After about 20 minutes, I realized I didn’t want to work there — I sensed the work environment wouldn’t be healthy. Most likely the teams are overworked, there's a strict top-down old-school management system, and work-life balance is probably not a priority. Sure, you could say they make GTA and are doing everything they can to build the best game in the world — and so they treat employees however they want, business is business. But I believe we live in the 21st century, and things need to improve. Advice If this impression is inaccurate, improve your hiring process and pay closer attention to who conducts interviews. If this impression is accurate — work on improving your company culture.

      Question 1

I think one of the questions was: "How would you spawn cars at nearby intersections to make the city feel populated?"
